I wouldn't be caught dead saying Kawaii. I like Japanese culture, but I'm glad I'm not obsessed to the point that I want to BE Japanese. It seems like a lot of Westerners forget there are other awesome places in Asia too, like Hong Kong and Taiwan. People tend to eliminate these places from their visual spectrum, just because they're not Japan, which is sad. Not sure if people will understand this comment, but I wanted to say it anyhow :s

Agreed. But that might be because I've read the wikipedia article on the Kindchenschema (German) and the article about cuteness on wikipedia: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kindchenschema https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuteness

Both are about roughly the same topic and cover pretty much everything that is written in this blog post.

I would be interested to know why the phenomenon of "cuteness" itself has taken off so rapidly and become so embedded in Japanese culture.

Edit: Good article though.

I've heard about the bubble wrap experiment before but what I heard was that the extra popping was because people get frustrated when they can't have what they want. In the bubble wrap case, people get frustrated that they can't hold the cute thing and release that frustration by popping the bubble wrap. Not sure if that's the official conclusion of the experiment since I never read about it directly myself, but it's what I've been told.
