I think its a bit misguided to say that its just a big guilt tripping scheme, its insulting in a way, To the parents that have gone through a Miscarriage or Abortion, and want to do something for them. People have expensive funerals and such, is it such a bad thing to remember a child you lost. Most people who have miscarriage or abortion in Japan won't do this, not everyone buys into the whole story, some Parents just wanted it as a way to remember their child,

As someone who has been through a miscarriage its heartbreaking and its nice that there is a way to recognize the loss.

What a lovely article. Really enjoyed it! ^__^

For anybody who's interested in Jizo, I especially recommend "Mt. Osore" - which is also known as the "gateway to hell": http://zoomingjapan.com/travel/shimokita-peninsula-mt-osore/

This article didn't really mention it, so I thought I would. A majority of these statues that you find around Japan are paid for as an offering to abortioned children. It is a really big guilt tripping scheme and it's one that the would-be mothers are sucked into. I studied it quite a bit back in the day.
