Most dentists will tell you that you don't really need toothpaste. It's the brushing action that's important. Toothpaste simply makes things more pleasurable, gives you that minty-feeling-of-accomplishment, and gives you something to spit out. You can simply use water, or if you want a mild-whitening agent, baking soda and water.

That's true. There's not much culture of preventative dentistry. But then again, dentists shouldn't be required to keep your teeth healthy. Our bodies, if we let them, are more than capable of doing so. I'm no new age hippy, but hey, there were indigenous people with gorgeous healthy smiles before they switched to an industrialized processed "western" diet.

The worst thing for teeth is actually our diet. And it's not just the sugary foods, but also the lack of foods that contain the vitamins and minerals that our body can use to reverse and fill in cavities. Although your teeth are hard, they are very similar in composition to your bone tissue (yes, bone is living tissue). When your bones break, your body sends calcium, Selenium, K2, D3 and other vitamins and minerals to the spot to fix it. If we stopped fighting our bodies and started feeding it, it could actually fill cavities and reverse decay. The sad reality, though, is it is extremely difficult to live off a traditional raw foods diet, so we much brush and fluouride likely does assist the system due to lack of nutrients in our modern diet.
