I live right across the border to Switzerland, so I'm kinda snobbish about chocolate.. But traveling Japan I adored the local sweets selection. Little chocolate Fuji-shaped heaps with strawberry-chocolate tips? Pocky in all variations? Kit kat in every style possible? (I adore Banana, Matcha and Kinako variations) Delicious! But the thing I loved most where the small red Meji-bars - we would use them as breakfast thing: we traveled backpacker style and usually needed to get breakfast at the hostel. Buying a pack of those gigantic toasts, carefully slicing one piece open, insert small Meji-chocolate-bar, toast e voila.. chocolate-filled warm toast! Kept us going for the day (gosh, were we broke back then.. ) I still smile whenever I see Meji bars somewhere (usually only in pictures these days, sadly.)

I personally think that Japanese Candy/snacks are one of the best if not the best in the world. So much quality in the ingredients, the packaging, and the flavors!

I just got back from Japan and bought as many candy/snacks as I could carry! Oddly, I could hardly find any kit-kats other than the original and some green tea ones... I guess I will have to look again next time I go.

It's strange, I just got back from a month traveling across Japan and came back with the opinion that the Japanese weren't that into chocolate. There was plenty of pocky style chocolate treats, where it's more biscuit than chocolate, but there wasn't much actual bars/slabs of chocolate! The one thing that got me as well was the lack of Kit-Kat options, I'd been looking forward to trying a load but I only saw the macha flavour in a few shops with the rest being in Narita Airport... Great choice on Chocolate Disco by the way!
