On Japan's kaijuu encyclopedias, this "Backbeard" has to be an America's yokai.
But we can not find any evidence this yokai derives from any American mythology.

That's a mystery.

I don't know why people get so up in arms about finding out their place is haunted. Most ghosts don't care about you being there - leave them alone & they'll leave you alone.

I've lived in several ghostly places over the years, and have only had one experience with a mean ghost, and it was more annoying than anything. (It was a poltergeist - worst it ever did was bang on the window incessantly & threw a bag of rolls once.)

Obviously, if you get a really mean ghost or even a demon in your home, you need to take care of that. But a regular spirit? What's the harm?

Nice article. Your writing has some nice detail and flow to it.

I do have one comment though regarding the current state of spiritual affairs in Japan. Though you've said that the Japanese don;t regard spirits as being a reality, it sure seems to me that some form of spirituality is entrenched in their culture, much more so than we do in the west. When was the last time you saw an altar or prayer place or something equivalent to that in the average white American home? The bulk of our "spiritualism" seems consists of drunken Christmas nights and the occasional hung-over Sunday morning.

So I do have a question. Does the average Japanese working man or student actually stop by an altar to offer a prayer and say hi to their ancestors with some incense on their way to catching the train like it's portrayed in those J Dramas we love so much? Or is that just something that happens in TV land.

I saw some spirits here in Japan, mediums say that is easier to have this type of experience here. More than once I saw the spirit of a guy where I used to work. And I wasn't the only one.

Yes. We are open to investigation of anything paranormal, but we have only investigated hauntings so far. We are also teaching paranormal classes for a local college in September. That is why I love learning about paranormal lore of different cultures, it comes in handy!!
