The best ones find new and interesting ways to present those tropes.

Personally I went though the same phase as your friend before I reached the point of having seen enough anime to observe the formulae repeating. Now at least I appreciate that it’s a different kind of formulaic to the home grown or US television I see here in Britain.

I told him that anime is just as full of clichés – they’re just different clichés – then went on to prove it by exactly predicting the events of the final episode of a twenty-six episode series after having watched just the first two.

Yeah, it’s only peripherally related to the post, but you mentioned clichés… =P
