Mr. Right Could be Waiting Just Around the Corner. Every Corner.

Streetwalker. Gentleman of the night. Gigolo. Hustler. Escort. They have many names, and if you’ve ever been to a crowded Japanese city at night, you’ve probably seen them. Prowling the street corners, smiling at you, complimenting you, inviting you in for a drink. They look like skeezy band members, or perhaps rejected Final Fantasy protagonists. But no matter what you call them, they have only one thing on their mind. Your money. They are the host club men of Japan and they’re here to entertain. For a price.

On the Streets

Hundreds of days ago, Nick W. wrote a post about every variety of maid cafe and host club ever, but only touched briefly on the deep and interesting world of male hosts in Japan. These host clubs are bars and nightclubs that provide male companionship and entertainment to women and men alike in exchange for money. If you’re into that sort of thing.

Just like with any regular bar, you’ll have promoters out on the street trying to entice you in with promises of discount drink specials and compliments. Only this time the promoters look like they’re trying out for the live action adaptation of your favorite anime.

Hosts have a very distinct look and they’ll be sure to grab your attention with their overly processed and styled hair combined with their extravagant outfits. Styles vary by host club, but this style by far seems to be the most prevalent (and hilarious).

What They Do

Once they’ve managed to entice you inside, the hosts begin their dance of seduction. Most host clubs will charge a cover as well as an hourly fee, and the hosts get paid based on the bar tabs they manage to get their guests to generate. Depending on the club, this tab can add up fast.

Good hosts are personable, friendly, and far from stingy with the compliments. They flirt with their guests, tell interesting and funny stories, listen and pretend to be deeply interested in whatever their patrons have to say, and make them feel like the most important person in the world. Good hosts know what it takes to make it in this world and the best of the best can make a healthy amount of money.

So basically, the customers pay the host to treat them like royalty. They drink together, talk together, and laugh together. It’s just like any other bar or nightclub, except you’re paying for all the attention you’re getting and you get to pick out who gives it to you.

The customers at host clubs range from everyday girls to wives and daughters of rich men to even other hosts and hostesses. These host clubs usually open sometime the evening and some keep running all the way through early afternoon.

It’s a Host Eat Host World Out There

Surviving as a host, however, is more vicious than you might think. While the very talented can make bank at these establishments, most hosts are not so successful and are forced to drop out of the game relatively fast. As I said before, the hosts are paid based on the tabs their customers generate which is why so many go out on the street to try and lure in customers.

The worst part is how competitive these places can be. Each month the hosts are ranked by how much money they’re bringing in and how popular they are. And then these results are displayed outside the establishment on gigantic signs for everyone to see.

This is great if you’re near the top, but if you’re having a hard time getting customers, being ranked eighth out of eight isn’t going to do you any favors. People come to get the best of the best, and if you’re the worst of the worst and everyone knows it, it’s pretty hard to claw your way back up.

They’re Everywhere

Host clubs are very popular. You can find them all over Japan and there are hundreds in Tokyo alone. There are ones geared for girls who like guys, ones for guys who like guys, and even ones for girls who like guys dressed up as girls. They have it all. Just see for yourself.

This is another great video from Chris Gen. I mentioned him a while back in my Awesome Japanese YouTubers post and he does a great job of showing off the ladies’ red light district and gives us a good idea of what it’s like there. He even gets to talk to a few hosts and ask them a couple of questions.

Entertainment districts and host/hostess clubs have been around in Japan since the days of the geisha. Judging from how popular they still are and the great amount of variety they offer, I don’t see them going away anytime soon. Hosts are here to stay.

These lovable lugs have become so popular that they even made a documentary about them entitled The Great Happiness Space: Tale of an Osaka Love Thief. You can check it out both on YouTube and Netflix Instant! Wow!

Note from Hashi: When John showed me this post to edit, I told him that he should mention The Great Happiness Space, a documentary about host clubs which talks about the darker side of the business. I failed to tell him what was in the documentary, and that the host club business isn’t always fun and games. It’s my fault that the serious issues about host clubs weren’t talked about in this post, but if you want to learn about those, The Great Happiness Space does a fantastic job of looking at them.

So tell me ladies, would you ever go to one of these host clubs? What kind of guy would you pick out? Do you think Hashi should become a host? And gentlemen, would you ever consider becoming a host if you lived in Japan? Does anyone wish they had these clubs in their home country? Let us know in the comments!

I’d love to go for the experience just once, but since I don’t drink alcohol or even soda, I’d feel bad for the host, who would make no money.

  • Erid

I would totally go to one with guys dressed as girls. Totally.

I’m kinda surprised you didn’t mention Ouran High School Host Club in here, though.

  • ジョサイア

…Most of these guys are kinda creepy looking…

  • Adam.kintaro

I was hoping you would mention the documentary, I’m glad you did at the end! Those guys are the sleaziest rats out there! Sorry if I offend anyone. I hated running into them in Sendai at night. THey would have these alligator boots with rat-tail haircuts and they would always offer me cigarette lighters and other little gifts. I hated seeing those guys. That is such a sad cultural aspect to Japan. Nobody is happy so they all just pay people to convince them they are happy. The documentary really shows how messed up it all is, check it out!

  • Jessi

I’m actually kind of surprised at you, John, for not mentioning the masses of problems that are associated with host clubs, including, but not limited to, alcohol-related health issues and emotional instability. If you’ve watched that documentary, you’ll see just how much of a problem these kinds of places can become, and I’m disappointed to see that it’s treated here as though it’s just a normal cafe kind of place where everyone just has fun and talks nicely with each other. In attempting to discuss Japan’s culture, I think we need to be sure that we don’t gloss over the parts that are not as fun to talk about, and I’m frankly disappointed that you did not seem to see fit to discuss those aspects here. You have an opportunity to do some real good here, and I wish you would take advantage of that.

  • ですこ

When I saw the header I… I really thought this was going to be about another band.

  • Yu

Hashi would totally fit in one of these clubs… Although they are creepy. :D

  • Milos

I caught that documentary on netflix.  It was much better than I thought it would be – and it wound up being quite heartbreaking.  It was like this infernal Karmic circle of people who had lost all hope for real human connection, running back-and-forth in pursuit of its shadow.

It’s a short film, but in the end, incredibly moving and sad.

  • ShimamuraMiriam

why does it seem like there are only men who look like women in Japan nowadays? I like men who look like MEN. I would never go to one of those places, so creepy.

  • http://www.tofugu.com/ Hashi

My hair isn’t nearly feathery enough!

  • Jesse

I seen that movie a couple of years back, and it shock me. I also like the Tommy Lee Jones  coffee commercial on the subject.

  • http://www.tofugu.com/ Hashi

That’s my fault. John wrote this post, I took a look through it and told him he should mention The Great Happiness Space, because I’d seen it right after it came out. I neglected to tell him to watch through the doc and touch on all the negative issues that the Great Happiness Space talks about.

That’s something I should have caught while editing John’s post, and I’m sorry I missed out on that.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=513439726 Sharon Overlord

Yes, once only bc Im curious. But I dont drink alcohol, so I would just buy a bunch of drinks and not drink them.

  • http://www.tofugu.com/ Hashi

The Tommy Lee Jones commercial is pretty much the greatest thing ever

  • Xsuna

    Same here

  • Xsuna

So… wonderfully… random. What’s Japan’s love (for some) for paying to have someone listen to them though (first maids, now… this)?

Oh, and why’s Ron Weasley hijacked the first image?

  • Kyaa

Sure i’d go…I mean why not?! I think the experience would be really cool… I wouldn’t pick the highest ranked ones…It seems like they’re doing fine already xD

  • http://www.tofugu.com/ Hashi

Hey now, don’t stereotype based on look – beautiful Japanese men can pursue any career they want! They can be hosts, singers, models, neuroscientists, or whatever other profession they and their feathered hair desire!

  • Mandarina

It’s kind of creepy to see their pictures hung up that way… I don’t think I’d ever go to a host club, but if I went of course I’d pick Hashi!

  • http://twitter.com/hello_peep ジェシーアーン

I’m so torn on it! I really want to go because it sounds like fun and of course id love to be showered with compliments from a cute boy. I also have this strange fascination with hosts, i dont know why i just do. BUT the idea of paying for it all makes me feel stupid. So I don’t know if i’d go or not.

I LOVED the documentary. It was so disturbing to watch for me. I didn’t know who broke my heart the most the girls or the hosts. That made me never want to go to a host club.

And im so happy you put up Chris Gen’s video! Him talking to the hosts is HILARIOUS!! THAT made me want to go. Lol.

    Great post John! (^_^)b

  • linniea

I don’t think I’d ever go to a host club, not even for laughs. I’m way too scared of how good they might be at their jobs :P

  • http://www.tofugu.com/ Hashi

Pssh, everybody knows that Koichi is the #1 host at Tofugu.

  • J.

     Yup, yup. Me too.

  • ジョサイア

Same here, I saw this post then johns name then I was thinking ”I’m sure he said he was not going to post about anymore heavy metal bands”…Maybe this a non heavy metal band?

  • ジョサイア

    What if a”
beautiful Japanese man ” joins AKB48 that would be an all time low xD

  • Yuki

I’d go… but only if it were the Ouran Host Club. :D

  • J.

I completely agree. It’s rather concerning
to know that people pay for attention and false-love. I’m guessing customers
can quickly become addicted and possessive over their favorite host.

  • Heather Meadows

Do hostess clubs have similar issues?

  • Iambus22

Hell yeah I’m going to go to one!  If I can I want to save up a couple hundred? dollars JUST for a host club :P

  • John

I will admit, it did cross my mind as I like that anime a lot, but I figured it’d be best to not wander too far off topic, haha.

  • John

We appreciate the feedback, and I wish I could address the darker side more fully, but unfortunately I’ve not seen the documentary and don’t have enough firsthand experience with host clubs to really get into it fully, but both me and Hashi recommend that anyone interested in that to definitely check out the documentary. From what I’ve heard, it’s pretty interesting.

  • http://www.tofugu.com/ Hashi

I can’t really say because I’ve never researched hostess clubs, but I certainly imagine so!

  • http://hanlonsrzr.blogspot.com/ Anthisthenes

No wonder there are ‘gaijin hunters’.  A Japanese woman gets treated decently and not for money (perhaps for something else) and he doesn’t make her anxious she is not as pretty as him.

  • legendofleo

    Hosts and nanpa-men scare me.

  • Ann Mehrman

I just got my morning derailed by watching “The Great Happiness Space” but it was well worth it. It is an excellent documentary that deals with the physical and emotional price that is paid when people try to buy love and attention for both the men and women.

  • http://amandajapanda9000.blogspot.com/ amandajapanda

The middle guy in the very first picture looks a little like Jaejoong from DBSK. XD. And no, I wouldn’t go to one of those…unless it had hosts like Ouran High School Host Club.

  • ZXNova

Gonna be honest, those guys look kinda creepy to me. (From a guys prespective)

  • Quufer

I got my evening derailed by TGHS, but it was definitely worth it.  Thanks for the shout-out about it Hashi!

  • Megan Scott

I would love to experience one of these crazy clubs but I get the feeling in order to pay for it I might just have to work at one myself…it’s good to know at my time spent working at a sportsbar won’t have been in vain ;P

  • ですこ

That’s not true, there are also women who look like women, along with robots who look like women.

  • ですこ

     Host… or hostess?

  • http://8cake.livejournal.com/ Cake

    Oh, hosts.
Ha ha ha, yes. Hosts all look the same and are everywhere. Everywhere.
I once got lost around… Shinjuku, I think. Hosts wandering around during daylight hours are kind of scary (or maybe that’s because the Keisatsu were having a conversation with them……).

And in Akihaba you can get the male equivalent of maid-cafe hosts – cute anime-come-to-life guys wearing waiter or butler outfits!
Not to mention I saw ads for cafes where you could go out on dates with a gentleman dressed as your favourite anime/game character (for a fee, of course).

  • http://www.tofugu.com/ Hashi

No problem, I’m glad you enjoyed it!

  • RoanRose

     lol

  • Kelseylynnm1989

I’m so glad you mentioned The Great Happiness Space. That documentary was interesting and enlightening, but it was also kind of depressing :[[ I feel bad for hosts after watching that. However, they don’t seem to mind too much, as they make bank doing it. But what is the point of making bank if you are ALWAYS working and never get to do much with it?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HJ5SO7DLY3OR76LE4LD23D6TLQ fortziii

geesshhh seriously, they look ugly… and GAY…

  • simplyshiny

Host clubs, yes please….if its free

  • http://twitter.com/shollum Shollum

There’s a manga where that happens (though I assume the name of the group is slightly different)…
Obviously not reality, but just to let you know that the concept has been explored before.

  • 古戸ヱリカ

Now, now, fortzy, no need to be rude. Some men love other men, some men love pretending to love other people because they also love money, and some men love putting tacky LED lights on their Nissan Sentras. Actually, that last one is kind of unforgivable, so avoid doing it, I guess?

  • http://mirta08.deviantart.com/ Mirta

There are host clubs with many women, but are there host clubs with manly men?
