Japanese Fart Scrolls

I was doing research for another post a while back, and found something a bit…unusual. It was an old Japanese scroll about farting.

No, you didn’t misread that last sentence. The whole scroll, which is called He-Gassen (“The Fart Battle”) is just about people farting. Farting at other people, farting at cats, farting off of horses, farting into bags; just farting everywhere.

Why? I couldn’t really tell you. I’ve tried to do some research but, believe it or not, academic literature on Japanese farting is surprisingly few and far between.

I found some relevant articles on my old university’s academic databases, but the only way I could obtain them would be to request them printed out and go pick them up. Which, you know, isn’t something I really want to do.

I can only imagine what it would be like if I went back to school to pick up my fart literature:

“Hi, how can we help you?”

“I’m here to pick up some articles I put on hold.”

“Sure, what are they about?”

“Well, they’re, um, about farting.”

“…”

I did find out enough to know that this isn’t the only farting scroll out there in existence – in fact, in the 90s, a collection of fart scrolls sold for $1,500 at the famous Christie’s auction house. I am not making this up.

I also found out that the famous uikyo-e artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi also dabbled in fart art, painting a piece depicting dudes farting at each other.

Perhaps the greatest piece of this farting scroll is a giant panorama of four dudes farting into a building, and the chaos ensuing within. Click on the picture below for the full-sized version because really, it’s not something you wanna miss out on.

In the end, I think I tried to read too far into this. I kept expecting to find some deep cultural explanation as to why these guys made whole scrolls about farting. But I think it really just boils down to one universal truth: farts are funny.

We can pretend that our senses of humor are more sophisticated than that, but let’s face it: when somebody lets one rip, you’re going to chuckle.

And, as if this wasn’t enough, we made a video for this too. Conspiracy? Maybe. Aliens? Definitely.

(Originally found on Naruhodo. You can find the rest of the fart scroll, in its entirety, on Waseda University’s website here.)

Saturday Timewaster is a weekly post that features Japanese videos, music, images, or games that will certainly waste your time (some weeks more than others). We hope you enjoy!

This is the funniest thing I have ever seen lmao

  • ZXNova

I guess everyone can agree that farts are funny. Yup.

  • http://twitter.com/shollum Shollum

I love how the Japanese had the sense to use block censors all those years ago.

But really, I bet some old, dead guy is rolling in his grave laughing at the reactions to these scrolls.

  • don’t waste my time

this is probably the worst and most boring article written on tofugu to date.

  • guestinoob

    it is a saturday time waster though (. _ . );

  • kurt

I love this article. Anyone who can’t take humor in a fart is not human.

  • JosephBecker

“Next up in our auction we have some fine Japanese paintings that depict… oh my…”

  • ic

yeah you’re right… but saturday time wasters are usually much better written and informative. this one just isn’t up to par.

    Can’t… stop… laughing…

At the beginning of this article I was thinking, “Man everyone in Tofugu writes the best articles.”

When I got to the bottom though and found out that Hashi wrote this one, I thought, “Okay yeah, I still like Hashi’s articles the most.”

    XD

Favourite line: “Why? I couldn’t really tell you. I’ve tried to do some research but, believe it or not, academic literature on Japanese farting is surprisingly few and far between.”

  • threadbrains

Utagawa’s farts are like laser beams.

    Thanks Hashi.

I think that’s just Tofugu censoring content to not offend their readers…

  • Kenneth Mendenhall

These guys definitely have some power, but I would say William Wallace can do more damage.

  • Kiriain

Yo dude! Pass me the mind bleach. I’ve got a really good reason for it.

  • ಠ_ರೃ

I agree. The subject matter is most unorthodox! Have we no standards, good chaps?

  • markeywo

    *facepalm*

  • Paladin341

This is WTF Japan Seriously worthy.  Like seriously… wtf?

  • Compuwise

What a gas! Pretty sure he mislabeled that goat or lamb as a cat.

  • Kindler

I didn’t realize that the Japanese discovered biological warfare…

I live in otaru, hokkaido japan, my wife is japanese from sapporo, and my 5 year old son as well. Every other day, someone fart’s. おならした!だれおならした?くさい!My son always says。 We always find it funny, and somewhat joyful. おとうさんおならした!My wife claims that she never has farted ever. But i know this isnt true, ive caught her before. She also claims that her farts don’t smell, actually they dont really. Also she often asks me permission if she can fart, which i find quite strange。 As if I will be offended somehow I always say どうそ

The Japanese are the most earthy people there are.  They are a bit more ahead … yet also enigmatically more primitive than us all in modern cultures.  I love em and would gladly become a Japanophile, if I wasn’t already married to a feisty Thai lady.  Dynomite comes in small packages you know.

Could it be  just some ancient fun cartoon type humor, after all Geoffrey Chaucer Canterbury Tales and Boccaccio’s Decameron are full of such stuff.

  • Are you puritans?

This is the internet.  I don’t think you have to censor artwork on the internet.  Funny article though!

  • Jon E.

It’s pretty obvious he is speaking in jest at “don’t waste my time” (which, ironically, is on a post about a Saturday Timewaster).

  • ಠ_ರೃ

    It’s true, dood.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rightangle Andrew Angle

Anybody ever eaten REAL Japanese food?  It’s no wonder that sensational flatulence appeared as the subject of their art.

  • ASIvanoff

    All that kim-chee.
(But really, why are there censorship blackouts on genitals? How cowardly. Obviously, when these scrolls were created, nobody thought it was anything worth hiding.)

It would not be that strange of a request!  There is a famous 19th century essay, “On Farting” by Hiraga Gennai that I studied in two different courses.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/HLO6LV3FEGS2W7NWQA5E66TKCU ananda

“Ahead”? “Primitive?” “Modern” cultures?   Really?  You see nothing wrong with that?

  • http://zoomingjapan.com/ zoomingjapan

    I’ve NEVER seen those ANYWHERE! … And I’m glad I didn’t!

  • http://hackerhaus.com hackerhaus

Unreal.  I’m writing my thesis on the use of bodily functions as metaphor in Japanese.  Do you have an original sourcing on these?  I’d like to cite them in my research.

  • CelestialSushi

Um… yikes.  That’s really… infantile? XD  I mean, yeah, funny, but, going out of your way to depict THIS in your scrolls? My mind is boggled. THEN AGAIN… this is Japan we’re talking about.  You’ve seen their television programs.

And thank you for having the decency to cover them up a bit; it’s very much appreciated :)

  • Sean F.

Too much natto (fermented soybeans, oxygenated by stirring twenty times before eating) — surprisingly nobody else has said it so I had to.  How about an enema scroll next time (“kancho” — a dreaded children’s game around here)?  Japanese being obsessed with bathing maybe more than the Romans seem more sensitive to odour than most, and talk about it more even nowadays . . .

  • Joe Schmoe

    Holy crap Batman!

  • Joseph Goforth

i’d wager you can find fart pics in every culture of note.  low brow comedy is universally funny.

  • Whatever

How is showing something that is there naturally, offensive? In fact, it’s offensive not to show the genitals.

  • baha

    This is hilarious

  • Alex

I’d look into Japanese parody. This looks like it’s probably parody of certain forms of Japanese painting/stroytelling.

  • Alex

    Or against the aristocracy.

  • Alex

More specifically, it seems like a somewhat anti-war parody against the military and its delusions of grandeur.

  • http://ogijima.com David @ Ogijima

I have to admit I’m a little offended by this. I mean by the censoring of some of the pictures. While I find this habit pretty despicable in general, I find it even more hypocritical on such a post and such images. You can do better Tofugu…

  • Jim

I had caught wind of this a few years ago but didn’t realize it was spread so wide.

Love the scene in which they discovered the defensive shield technology of the fan! Hilarious!

  • Tomiko

I understand that this is your opinion and there are no facts stated, but can you not see how it is completely racist? You would become a “Japanophile” if you weren’t already married to a Thai woman? As if your wife’s nationality matters in this point at all? Loving a culture has nothing to do with marital status. Personally, MY opinion is that the Japanese ladies are better off without your condescension.

  • Czsih

I guess every country has their version of Jerry Springer and Dumb and Dumber humor.
    It’s a shame.

  • JatinChittoor

OMG!!! This is literally the funniest thing ever!!!!! Could not stop laughing. rofl!!!!

  • JatinChittoor

OMG!!! This is literally the funniest thing ever!!!!! Could not stop laughing. rofl!!!!

  • Sorrii

Hmmm. Anyway the craziest thing is those black labels hiding the only natural thing in pictures … Why?!?

  • Bart

Because people get offended over the dumbest things?
