They did more than give them their orthography. A large percentage of Japanese culture was influenced by ancient China. Silk, rice, noodles, chopsticks, traditional instruments, philosophy, to name just a few.

Not really. At that time China was the most powerful country in East Asia. They had no need to compliment any country. To this day Chinese dislike Japanese people. Do more research, please.

i think the symbol wa was a compliment- i dont know how the hell you make dwarf out of grain and women- perhaps the two most valuable things back in those days

North Chinese are on average taller than Japanese people. Also, China and Japan have always have a love have relationship even before WWII. You also have to remember that at that time China was the most advanced and powerful country in East Asia, so they sort of looked down on anyone who wasn’t Chinese…including the Japanese. It wasn’t by accident that they chose that name. There are still many derogatory words used against the Japanese in China, but that’s mostly due to they hatred they have toward the Japanese because of WWII. Also to the guy that said it was because of hot chicks and rice…china had rice before Japan did! Also, there are plenty of hot Chinese women, too…

Anyway, that’s my explanation…
