Koichi --- Quick question.

Why does the "The Kunyu Wanguo Quantu" map have Katakana we can read, including daku-on readings?

a) I thought this was the Chinese map
b) I didn't think Chinese used katakana
c) I didn't think Japan standardized the katakana usage until much later

Is this a modern reproduction of the map where katakana was added?

Really enjoyed this article! You put a lot of work in.

Its really inspiring to see how much "unknown" was around them and how fast they actually managed to trace the entire earth!. I mean today I know world maps so well I love knowing what's out there but imagine back then...the world would have seemed boundless.

I want Ino's map as my background, so awesome. Street view is wild, and awesome. I love street-veiwing random places in Japan: there is so much varied and neat architecture, even in average neighborhoods. Also, I was showing my grandfather a bridge over a creek by a house where he grew up (sounds like the name of a sad movie, lol), and he was absolutely blown away that I was able to find it. I didn't show him street view, that probably would have scared him.
