Using “Jerry Seinfeld’s Secret To Productivity” To Learn Kanji

I read about this strategy on Lifehacker (you can read the whole thing here) about a week ago, and thought it would be particularly useful for kanji (and vocab) learning. Learning a new language isn’t so much about the language itself. It’s more about staying motivated and making progress. Sure, some people can grind through things and never get off track. For the rest of us, “learning hacks” like these are extremely helpful.

Jerry Seinfeld’s Secret To Productivity

Jerry Seinfeld is a master at being funny. That’s pretty much what he’s done for a living most of his life. That being said, it’s not like he became funny overnight. Despite what you might think, being funny (or being anything, for that matter) takes a lot of practice. His secret to productivity / being funny? Write jokes every day.

That’s not the cool part, though.

Doing something every day is hard. The thought of, say, learning a new kanji every day can feel daunting. It becomes a chore, just like “washing the dishes every day” or “vacuuming every day.” If you think about repetitive, small tasks like this, they get repetitive and you won’t want to do them as much, which is unfortunate, since learning a little bit every day really adds up. Think about it:

If you learn one kanji per day, that’s 365 kanji per year (doesn’t seem like much, but it’s probably more than most people learn in most classes).

If you learn a mere two kanji per day, that’s 730 kanji per year.

If you learn three (just three!) kanji per day, that’s 1095 kanji per year and half of all the kanji you really need to know (around 2000). Plus, this is way faster than the speed at which Japanese kids learn kanji.

If you learn five kanji per day, you’ll know a cool 1825 kanji by the end of the year. Depending on how you filter things, this is pretty much all you need to know (I know joyo kanji have a bit over 2000 kanji to learn now, but this is pretty close).

Five kanji per day is definitely doable… but most people never do this. Why? Because it’s hard… it’s hard to do something every single day. Really, it’s as simple as that, I think.

So, the question isn’t “how do I force myself to do something every day?” The question should be “how do I change my way of looking at kanji learning to motivate myself to want to learn?”

Luckily, Seinfeld has that part down too (otherwise, how would he write all those jokes?). Here’s his real secret:

Seinfeld has a big year calendar, showing all the days of the year. Every day that he writes jokes, be puts an X through that day. After a few days, you’ll have yourself a little streak. Then, you’ll find that you’ll start to enjoy the chain. You’ll want to see the chain continue. Then, your only job is to do what it takes to keep that chain going. As he emphasizes in the article: “Don’t break the chain.”

This is great, because it moves the pressure and motivation around. Your focus isn’t “what kanji do I need to learn today?” Instead, it’s “what action do I need to do to take to keep my streak going?”

The longer the streak, the more important it becomes. The more important it becomes, the more likely you are to do it. Instead of doing less and less over time, you’re doing more and more. All these little, daily sessions add up to something big – and that’s not even taking into account how you’ll get better at learning kanji, which means you’ll learn more in less time the more your practice.

The Tools You Need To Get Started

Now, you could buy a big year wall calendar (they are pretty nice if you have the wall for one), but I whipped up an alternative you can download and print out right now if you’d like to get started asap.

[ilink style="download" url="http://www.tofugu.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/365days.pdf"]365 Days “Keep The Streak”[/ilink]

The above download is a PDF that can be used in a couple of different ways, depending on your preference. The sheet itself is pretty simple. It consists of 365 boxes (plus one extra for leap year), each with a number (between 1-365). You could either…

  1. Try to keep your streak going for 365 days (and then if you miss a day, print out a new sheet and start over). Or…
  2. Just keep going with the same sheet even if you miss a day, or two, or three. The goal in this version is to make the longest streak possible within these 365 days, which means if you miss a day or two, those boxes would be blank, and you’d re-start your streak after the blank tiles.

I don’t know which one is better, but the second one is a little closer to Seinfeld’s version if you want to stay true to that. Then again, you can also get yourself a big year wall calendar, but hopefully this is a good enough alternative for some of you.

Oh, And This Doesn’t Have To Be Used With Kanji…

I was just thinking something like this fit really well with kanji when I was writing this article. Of course, you can use this strategy (and PDF) to to motivate yourself to do all kinds of things. Here are some additional ideas:

  • Getting through all your Anki reviews / other flashcard reviews
  • Learning X number of new vocab words
  • Reading/translating a Japanese newspaper article, blog post, tweet, etc., every day
  • Writing a Japanese journal entry every day on Lang-8
  • …not to mention all the non-Japanese language related self-improvement things you could be doing!

…and let me know what you’d use it for in the comments below!

Remember, it’s about the streak, not about the kanji. Give it a shot, see if you can get something going for a good week or two, and let me know how it’s going for you!

This is a fascinating idea, but what constitutes “learning” a kanji in this program? 10 minutes of repetition? Writing it over and over until the bottom of the page? And what about review?

When I miss a day, I give myself the option of doubling up the next day. We all have a rough day sometimes, so it’s good to not be too hard on yourself. As long as you make it up the next day I think it is fair to X it off.

This is amazing! I used to be a professional organizer and I give it 2 thumbs up!!

  • http://alanagreen.blogspot.com Japan Alana

It’s your choice! You set the parameters. Review is an excellent point. Maybe every 10th kanji you can take a review day instead of learning a new one.

Tofugu & Seinfeld jokes at the end….two of my favorite things. :)

when i was child i did something like that for brush my teeths like for 2 weeks and it works!! although i stop writing i did never forget

  • http://twitter.com/ichigoichielove Lisa W

Ooh I like this! Although I’m good about studying every day in general (even if just a little bit), I’m less good with being more specific about the parameters. I suspect having a better visual overview of it all would help a lot – especially since I’m lazy with kanji these days. ^^; Thanks for this, will def look into it more, and hopefully print out that funky sheet tomorrow!

  • Foozlesprite

I’d make yourself a list in Anki or another flashcard program. Then get yourself a piece of kanji paper or graph paper. Every time a kanji comes up in Anki, write the kanji down once. Anki will keep you reviewing as well as learning new ones. Just make sure to do it every day! I’ve been doing 5 kanji a day in Anki since the beginning of the year, and now I know several hundred kanji. It’s a great feeling, and it works well.

there’s a nifty little online toy called streak.ly – i use it to keep myself motivated for daily tasks. it’s actually not very powerful (you can only define tasks and check them, that’s it), but it turns the whole affair into a game – tracking your streak and awarding badges and merits as you progress in your streak. plus, it sends you reminders to keep you on your toes.

  • http://www.project-kathryn.com kathryn

The whole learn 1 kanji a day, or 5 kanji a day concept is lost on me. If I learn 5 kanji today and 5 kanji tomorrow, I don’t know 10 kanji, I just know today’s kanji. You can’t learn kanji and have it stick in your brain after one day.

  • Foozlesprite

That’s why you used a spaced repetition system to review based on how well you know it.

  • http://www.project-kathryn.com kathryn

That’s my point – you aren’t just learning 5 kanji a day, you are learning 5 kanji a day and reviewing a heap of others.

  • Lawnmower16

I honestly prefer not to have a plan. As soon as I make a real plan of any kind (with anything), it starts to feel like a chore. That’s why I just always make sure I’m doing something Japanese related, and not worry about whether I’m making as much progress today as I did yesterday. This chart thing might work for some people, but definitely not for me.

  • gorghurt

yeah, but the repitition should become easyer with every day(ok first it will take some time, but later it should be easy)
but it takes longer every day i think, so imho it would be ok, to lern less the longer the streak goes.
when you have a good day you can propably lern 5 kanji, or even more(well i doubt its good, but why not, when you are such a genius) but at bad days, or later even normal days, 5 kanji and the repitition are a little bit much, the farther you progress the more it is

    ps:
i think its a reat idea, an i think to become the start done JFDI are the only 4 letters needed

i think i will start with this, rigth after my university tests.(which remembers me: i should read mathematic scripts, not the interwebs)

  • gorghurt

i think you shouldnt see it as a plan, but as a game, as a chalenge.
and of course, it would be really bad, if you make it too strict.
i think there should be a goal, like 5 kanji a day, but if its a bad day even 3 kanji should be enough.
    or one really difficult kanji.

and i doubt this is something you do, when you just someday want to speak japanese, this more seems like a method to get speed in things.
i , as an example, am lerning japanese for 6 years now, and well all works more or less, except kanji.
and i dont want to invest another 6 years to lern them, so i have to make a “plan”.

  • Cassandra

Cool! I love goals and records and such. I have a spreadsheet for Japanese showing exactly what I’ve studied and how long. Goes back to when I first started in Jan. 2010. :D

  • Natepd

This is great. I had already figured out my problem was that my hobbies had become annoying tasks I just didn’t know how to motivate me back. I think this will work.

  • Jack

すごい!I’m printing that calendar right away…

  • mSamyel

    That’s right!
I made myself a day’s schedule. I have specified when I should learn new Kanji and when to practice. It increased my productivity a lot. Without it I would just procrastinate and learn nothing :)

  • http://hatchjapan.wordpress.com/ ざっちー

There’s only one problem with this. Seinfeld never got funny.

  • http://rachelnabors.com Rachel Nabors

Thank you so much for this sheet and idea!

I’m printing three sheets for three goals:

“Study Japanese” in general (I have a lot of learning materials I use simultaneously, depending on my time, weaknesses and inclination).

    “Draw comics”

    “Work out”

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

That’s super slick! I was trying to think of a way to use this method to keep track of multiple daily tasks / weekly tasks… and this solved just about everything! I’m totally doing this now, thank you!

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

I agree with @JapanAlana – it’s gotta be your choice – the main thing is that you’re taking action and getting past the problem most people have, which is just getting started in the first place!

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

Very nice! I like it – I wish there was a desktop app or browser extension, though… something a little more “in your face” – I like it, but I think I’d forget about checking it since I can’t see it (I suppose it could always be my homepage… but rarely do I see my homepage with all the tabs I have open when I close down for the day…)

Then again, maybe there is one of these things – I haven’t looked yet, oops!

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

    bbbwwawwwhhahwaaaaaaattttttttt?

  • http://twitter.com/SuperNoonim SykoRyoko

This is actually kind of a super idea.

  • http://twitter.com/VXLbeast VXLbeast

I made this for you!!! :P

  • Sammy

Oooooh~! I like this idea ^-^ Think I’ll able this to both japanese and uni studies in general ’cause I have a horrible habit of procrastination >.<

  • HeroicPrinny

And what’s the deal with Kanji? Can people actually read those things???

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

Probably more people than can read English, I bet :)

  • bj

Great idea, going to give this ago for Kanji and a few other long-term goals!

  • jace

the only problem i hae with this is – Where do you find five kanji a day?

are there any good sites that have a list of all the joyo kanji with the definitions, context, on and kun? every site i go to says something a little different, having slightly different definitions and a variety of different on and kun.

things like anki are great and all but i just can’t study like that. i need a list of kanji so i can make my own flashcards or decide for myself what kanji to learn on what day.
you know- make my own sort of schedule/assignments

does anyone get what im saying?

the definitions and readings on wiki arent very accurate. eg: for 下 the ONLY definition it gives is below, but on jisho it says below, descend, down, give, inferior.

but as just a list which lists the kanji by grade, its great
i suppose it would be pretty easy to use the wiki just to get the kanji and then use jisho for the definitions.

    thanks

I have severe/chronic procrastination and my consistency is so bad I could have become fluent in two languages – at a leisurely pace – in the time I’ve spent “rollercoastering” it. My goal: Whatever else I do for Japanese, I WILL learn 1 jukugo (containing two new kanji) every day.

8 days later and while the novelty hasn’t quite worn off yet, it works! The task feels smaller/less than it is, and my natural persistence is able to come through because it’s “simply” about marking boxes (and I don’t want the disappointment of missing one). I actually *want* to review them regularly…out of enjoyment. o_O

I cover up the rows below the one I’m working through, just to make sure I don’t start thinking in terms of how much I still have to do. Consistency is truly worth more than any plan, method, or study crunch.

um, I tried this last year and year. I was able to keep it up for 3 months, I think. If you rush learning kanji, you’re going to forget them. on my last 3 weeks, I coulnd’t remember the kanji I learned on the second week when I began, so technically it was all in vain.
