Tofugu PSA: We’re Hiring!

Tofugu’s currently looking for 2-3 part time workers to do a couple of different tasks. One requires you to be here in Portland, OR. The other requires you to be anywhere in the world with an internet connection. The two positions are:

Blog Post Writer: (*yawn, boring job title*) – We’re looking for a couple of really good writers who can complete 3-4 posts per month. Besides the ability to write good (and wanna do other stuff good too) this person should be exceptionally reliable, have an interest in Japan, have an interest and/or proficiency in the Japanese language, and preferably have one “Japan-related topic” that they could specialize in (though you wouldn’t be pigeon-holed into that topic, either). Application can be found here.

Media Magikarp: (*whew, slightly less boring job title*) – We’re looking for someone in Portland, OR who can work from our office to help us with our video and media production. As many of you know, we’ve done a poor job getting videos out on our YouTube channel. This person’s job will be to help with that. You’ll be working closely with us to plan and shoot new videos as well as work with old footage (from our last couple trips to Japan). Basically, you’ll need to be a whole production company wrapped into one person’s brain. Perhaps one day you’ll become a Media Gyarados as well. Application can be found here.

Should you be interested in knowing about future Tofugu jobs, Viet put together a brand spankin’ new Jobs Page. Please take a look at that to see the jobs that are available at the moment as well as how to apply. Also be sure to follow us on Twitter, Facebook, or just keep reading the blog for announcements on new jobs.

  • Serious

Would you be interested in unpaid slaves?

  • Aya

    KOICHI’S GOT A WHIP THOUGH

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

Really depends on how qualified said unpaid slaves are.

  • Richard Robertson

Wow! If only I was in a position to be hired! These two jobs I have dreamed about doing (no lie!) as an adult. It’s a shame I’m still in education (and in the UK) ╮(╯▽╰)╭

P.S. When I leave Uni I am so applying for a job here! d(-_^)

  • Death To Flying Things

Do we get bonus points if we’re Mariners fans?

  • Aya

You get bonus points if you’re Felix Hernandez.

  • Serenyty

Definitely applying for the blogging position. Do you want both references to be writing focused? Should they be my professional references, or would people who know me just from online blogging work?

Either way, I’m going to compile this application in the next couple of days and send it your way. :) Japanese music is my personal area of interest.

    Whatever you think is best

  • Tora.Silver

Wow, I jumped when I saw this post. I was hoping for an opening for an artist, although Aya’s already got that covered.
On an unrelated note, Aya, how would you like the opportunity to take a trip in a hot air balloon?

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

    we hire students too

  • Sarah

How old do you have to be? Does age matter as long as you are reliable?

  • Sugoida

So write about each of the five topics, or just choose one?

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

yep, it’s possible. basically, you send me a guest post to hello@tofugu.com and I’ll take a look. 90% of guest posts don’t get in I’m afraid, though, so do your best if you do it.

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

write titles for each five topics (I want to know what you’d write about).
write an outline for one of those titles.

  • Sugoida

Oh, and “Besides the ability to write good”. I think you mean “write well”, Mr. Tofugu editor. ;)

  • Sarah

Ok, thanks for the info though!

  • Stella

This is probably a REALLY stupid question, but do you have to be 18? I’ve always thought it would be really cool to write for Tofugu (I already write for another website, LearnMMD), but unfortunately I’m kinda still 15. Heh. orz

“You’ll be working closely with us to plan and shoot new videos as well as work with old footage (from our last couple trips to Japan). Basically, you’ll need to be a whole production company wrapped into one person’s brain.”

    The Dream. ;)

  • Tachypsychia

I’m about to move to Japan, and love to write but dunno if I could write articles of use. Koichi, would you benefit the writing from an unemployed househusband in Shimokita? If so I might apply just for something to do between traveling around the country and studying.

  • Cassie

Crying because I live on the complete oppisite side of the country T.T

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

    If you’re a good writer

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

yes, sorry, you’ll need to be 18

  • 古戸ヱリカ

Very misleading picture! His whip is red, so you can’t see the stains.

  • 古戸ヱリカ

You’re very well at noticing things like that.

  • LG

For the blog writer post, how much warning will the writer be given before they need to write a new post? And how much freedom would they have regarding the topics they write about each month?

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

You will be on a schedule, most likely, figured out ahead of time.

  • Bluemoon

Nice to see you hiring, but please, never ever let the person go who’s doing the illustrations/artwork. It’s golden, I love it so much and look forward to every new article just because of the pictures :-)

  • lychalis

Is fiction/IF writing applicable as experience? (I do have experience writing articles though, just wanted to ask)

  • Do you allow your part timer bloggers to also carry unrelated full time jobs?

  • http://www.vietamins.com Viet

Yep. As long as you can keep up with our release schedule, we don’t care if you carry other jobs.

  • Sugoida

Is it possible to do a guest post and get paid? Because I have subject ideas, but they’re few and far between.

  • http://zoomingjapan.com/ zoomingjapan

Good luck to everyone who’s applying! ^__^

  • Leliel

Typical, I’d love to apply for this– but I’m in my final year of university and I think it might end up being a bit too much if I do both at once (on top of learning Japanese as an extra as well)!
    Maybe next time…

  • Topher Redden

Let me know when you need some freelance programming work done ;)

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

    yep

  • stevenjhorton

    ^ This amuses me.

  • stevenjhorton

I wish there were a position where I could offer developing code for access to Wanikani. >_<

  • Tarun Mazumdar

I am a haiku poet. Can I apply and write about haiku and tanka?

  • Richard Robertson

Thank you for mentioning this, applying is very tempting. However I really do want to spend the next few years getting good qualifications and so I will gratefully decline my own application…
    Thank you though!

  • Evan White

Hoo! Finally finished my application. I’m really nervous, but I’m pleased with how it turned out. Good luck to all fellow applicants out there!

  • Frank

This is probably a really annoying question for which I apologize in advance, but may I ask roughly when we can expect to hear back about the blogging position?

  • Ar1masenka

Hopefully you guys hire more writers. I would love to write for you and even have experience using text fugu from a consumer’s stand point also. Wishing you guys a happy lunar new year! I have a huge interest in Japan and everything surrounding it. Anyhow, I will keep checking back on the job ads! It’s a shame it took me so long to stumble onto this post lol. Have a good one!
