John, I was able to check out KING OF THORN, and it was great! I really liked the story and the character development. The one quibble I have with it is the lack of gravitas. At no point did I think the World was in danger, despite the characters repeatedly mentioning the fact that it was. The art was very good and never drew my attention way from the story. // As an aside, John, you MUST check out KOTONOHA NO NIWA or GARDEN OF WORDS. It is easily the most beautiful anime I have ever laid eyes on. It is so sharp, so vivid, so beautiful. The story is moving and powerful. It is also a short at only 45 minutes. The way the director uses atmospheric shots is incredible. It is by the same director of THE CHILDREN WHO CHASE LOST VOICES, and 5 CENTIMETERS PER SECOND, if that means anything to you.

I second this.
I don't know if this is actually a trend or not, but original anime seem to be done much better than adaptations. Of course, this may just be a false pattern I noticed while thinking back on the great anime I've seen.
