Thoughts from a Japanese Media Pirate: For those of you craving media from Japan – whether it’s anime, drama, or movies – you know it’s hard to acquire them through . . . proper channels. Most of us have pirated at one point or another, but does it have to be that way? Why do we have to operate in a gray area of the law? A prolific Japanese media pirate lays their thoughts on the subject on Boing Boing.

One worker sued the city of Osaka and won this week in district court, striking down Osaka’s survey as unconstitutional. Even more inspiring: the worker who sued doesn’t even have any tattoos.

Tokyo’s anti-nuclear demonstrations a great place for romance: Anti-nuclear demonstrations have been commonplace in Tokyo and elsewhere in Japan ever since the 3/11 disaster, but it looks like the protests aren’t just a place for political action. Apparently, many people use it as a place to meet and erm, hook up with like-minded people. It’s for a greater cause, y’know? [via Twitter][/threecol_one_last]

[threecol_one]>71% of Japanese Viewers Think TV is Boring: Japanese TV can be captivating for those of us outside of Japan, but – as they say – the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. In a fairly unscientific online survey, 71.2% of Japanese viewers said that “television has become boring.” But honestly until Japanese viewers have watched Honey Boo Boo, they don’t know how good they have it.

14-Year-Old Student Arrested for Stabbing School Teacher Who Confiscated His Manga: After being told to repeatedly to stop reading manga in class, a 14-year-old boy stabbed his teacher in the shoulder with a ballpoint pen in retaliation. The boy was arrested, and later apologized. Word is still out on what manga he was reading.[/threecol_one] [threecol_two_last]

SoftBank buys Sprint: everything you need to know about the $20.1 billion acquisition : Last week we mentioned the rumors, but now it’s a done deal: Japanese cell phone company SoftBank has bought US company Sprint, catapulting SoftBank to the third-largest cell phone provider in the world. The Verge has a rundown on what the deal will mean for customers, and what the broader implication of the merger. I swear though, if I don’t see the Shirato family on American TV as a result of this acquisition, I’m going to flip some tables (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻[/threecol_two_last]

Oh god not Honey Boo Boo. I’ve never seen it, but it seems like an overly advertised show for lonely old people. Gah, it seems so annoying.

  • CelestialSushi

It was kind of funny: when I heard on CNN some weeks ago about the possible acquisition of Sprint by Softbank, I was like, “Wait a minute… isn’t that one of the advertised companies in Tiger & Bunny?” Sure enough, it’s on Wild Tiger’s outfit :D That’s where I recall first hearing about them, although I might’ve seen the commercials before the anime (but not noticed the company name)…

Why do Japanese people keep stabbing other people?

  • Reptic

Judging by past buy-outs, I have a feeling that Sprint will downplay its acquisition in advertisements and simply continue to operate normally, at least in appearance. Thus, asking for a Sprint Shirato family ad on American TV is about as realistic as asking for a Mickey Mouse cartoon featuring the Avengers because Disney bought out Marvel — It’s just not going to happen.

    >word is still out on the manga he was reading

Yup, grape juice ALL OVER my screen.

  • 古戸ヱリカ

    Because stabbing yourself is painful?

  • 古戸ヱリカ

It’s one of those point-and-laugh shows. I implore you to continue in your non-watching.

“71% of Japanese Viewers Think TV is Boring”

This American thinks TV (American) is boring. Hell, I know it’s boring!

Not just television but, music and movies as well.

Now, I do not keep up with Japanese television much but, I did know a Japanese-American chick who was living in Japan at one point and had said that anime was starting to get really crappy (This was a few years ago). Now, I guess the crappy crap has expanded within Japanese entertainment.

It’s like the creative industry has lost its balls and the balls cannot be found to grant wishes for enjoyable and original entertainment.

I guess there are no more Super Saiyan creators huh?

Between Ishihara and Hashimoto, it makes you wonder how these right wing extremists are reelected year after year. In a city as big and modern as Osaka, it’s crazy to believe that Hoshimoto thought he could get away with surveying public employees about their tattoos and then proceed to use it as a justified means for job advancement.

  • DAVIDPD

Japanese TV boring? What the what!!! Maybe they should pull broadcasting for a week and show them what they would be missing. That would do it.

  • http://www.tofugu.com/ Hashi

Hey, we can not watch it together!

  • 古戸ヱリカ

That, or people would find other things to do, and then wouldn’t go back to TV.

  • Emi

All TV is boring. My TV is only ever on for about 1 hour a month.
