Tofugu 2012 Summer Internship!

Some of you might remember our summer internship last year, when we ended up bringing on John as an intern and later, a regular writer.

Well it’s that time of year again! We’re looking to bring somebody on board the S.S. Tofugu for the summer (and maybe beyond).

If you’re interested in working for one of the coolest Japan blogs out there, then read on!

Job Description

What would you be doing as the Tofugu intern? Here’s a quick rundown of the basics:

  • Unpaid internship that runs for summer 2012.
  • Approximately 5-10 hours of work per week.
  • Write one post a week for Tofugu.
  • Help write, brainstorm, research and edit posts, videos, guides, and reviews.
  • Complete miscellaneous Tofugu-related tasks as needed.
  • Work from anywhere (with an internet connection).
  • One big summer long “project” that we’ll work with you on, based on your own personal interests.

Although writing is the main part of this internship, we’re open to other areas of education as well. Are you interested in marketing? We’ll probably have you do something marketing related. Body pillow sales? You’ll be stuck smack dab in the middle of our body pillows department. But, enough about the backbreaking internet labor you’ll be doing, what do you get?

Benefits As An Intern

You might be asking “But Hashi! What would I get in return for doing these menial tasks?.” I’m glad you asked! While this internship might not be “paid” with “money,” there are still a ton of benefits to interning at Tofugu:

  • Learn about what it takes to be a pro blogger.
  • Show off your writing to the best readers in the whoooole wide world ♥♥♥
  • Witness the inner madness of Tofugu/TextFugu/Wanikani firsthand.
  • Free Textfugu forever membership (normally $120) and Wanikani alpha access (priceless).
  • Opportunity for future (paid) work after the internship is finished.
  • Flexibility to also focus on something you’re interested in learning more about on a professional basis.

If that all sounds interesting to you, then you might want to make sure you fit all our requirements before filling out the application.

Requirements

Unfortunately, we can’t just take any old intern; we’ve got a few requirements:

  • Native or near-native English skills.
  • At least 16 years or older. Sorry kiddos, it’s a legal thing.
  • Strong (nonfiction) writing skills.
  • Familiarity with blogging software (extra credit if it’s WordPress!).
  • A technical background is a plus!

If you’re still with me after all of that, then you are not only incredibly patient, but you’re also ready to fill out the application!

Part 1: Application

The application is just a few basic questions (nothing too existential or soul-searching) for you to finish up by June 7th. Now take the red pill and see just how deep the rabbit hole goes.

And that’s it! Be sure to get the application done by June 7th. Good luck to everybody who applies!

Inner madness of your sites? Really? Your sites are like the most organised things on the internet.

    Oh, and stupid laws….

  • http://twitter.com/cararcen Carlos Arcenas

Response sent! Yay!!! Hopefully I’ll get that pack of stickers I was wishing to get last year…

  • Mystx

By Technical Background, what do you mean exactly? For instance, I’m pursuing Biology. Does that count as a technical background?

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

More like: “Can you work a computer and the intertubes”

But biology is cool too, as long as you are able to cure the impending zombie apocalypse…

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

When Jeff Goldblum interned for us two years ago he undid all our organization and made it very chaotic. life will find a way.

  • http://www.vietamins.com Viet

Some basic HTML, CSS, JS/jQuery, etcetera is a plus, but not totally necessary, is what I think koichi is getting at.

  • ジョサイア

My background is in computer science! :D
However, I’m too busy to intern for you, sorry.
I’ve been wondering…Is your blog hosting/database on your work-computer? or do you have a hosing site do it for you?

  • http://www.davidmansaray.com/ David Mansaray

Is this a ‘virtual’ internship? or is it only available for those living nearby?

  • http://www.tofugu.com/ Hashi

    Tofugu is hosted by MediaTemple.

  • http://www.vietamins.com Viet

It’s a telecommute position, so yes it is ‘virtual’. Although, if anyone that lives in the PDX area and qualifies…..

  • ジョサイア

    Okay.

  • http://www.vietamins.com Viet

It was the raptors. We had a raptor problem.

  • ジョサイア

    C/C++, Python, PHP, java…

I have applied :) I love this blog and would be ecstatic to work on the team :) Fingers crossed aye!

  • トム ジェンセン

I have a month long summer job that will take 100% of my time, other than that I’m pretty sure interning for you guys would be a blast. If you wouldn’t mind someone with a very tight schedule I’d be completely on board.

  • トム ジェンセン

not even very tight schedule, just kinda tied up for a month.

  • Emily Forrest

Have just applied. What an awesome opportunity! Do you take bribes? I have a pet rabbit that you can have in exchange for the internship. Office pet? (won’t mention he has just chewed through my phone charger and nibbled my favourite shoes)

  • Josh Thorsen

I’ve submitted my application. Good luck to everyone! Thanks Tofugu for this opportunity!

  • Ivy112999

    I’m only 12 and don’t liven Oregon d:

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=607790802 Alex Napoli

It want to apply but I’ll be studying abroad in Japan (first time going) and I think it might show a little too much of my baka gaijinity if I ignore my host family for my laptop.

  • http://twitter.com/shollum Shollum

I just might apply as I seem to have all the qualifications and since I spend about that much time on Tofugu anyways.

Of course, my application might look terrible since I lack blogging experience.

I’ll think about it (which means I’ll either submit really late or forget). Or maybe I’ll go ahead and enter it…

In any case, I have a stupid question. In the first field of the application where it asks for a name, does that want my first and last (given and family) or just my first?
I’ve never been good with electronic applications for some reason (I hate you grocery stores!).

  • John

I do not think this bribe interests me. Please, try again.

  • Masaki Hikaru

You should pay your interns in Tofugu stickers.

  • Gabe Moist

I would apply, but I imagine I’d be fired after I’d only get one post written every other month.

  • http://twitter.com/WackoMcGoose Kimura

Aw… I meet all the requirements except being familiar with blog writing… Is a week quick enough to get the hang of it? ;)

  • http://www.tofugu.com/ Hashi

You don’t have to live in Oregon, it’s a virtual internship. Although I guess being 12, it wouldn’t matter much anyway :p

  • http://www.tofugu.com/ Hashi

Either way works. If you don’t feel comfortable giving us your full name, then you can just use your first.

  • http://www.tofugu.com/ Hashi

If you have other writing experience, then that should be fine!

  • John

I had zero WordPress experience before I started my internship. As long as you’re a quick learner as far as computer things go you’ll be fine.

  • http://www.tofugu.com/ Hashi

    Thanks for applying! :D

  • http://www.tofugu.com/ Hashi

Tempting, but we already have an office pet that doesn’t play well with others :p

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001462817558 Michael Baltazar

just a question: are you hiring interns every summer?

  • http://www.tofugu.com/ Hashi

You can write once a week! I believe in you, Mr. Moist!

  • http://twitter.com/shollum Shollum

     Alright. Thanks for answering!

  • http://www.tofugu.com/ Hashi

    That’s the plan right now!

  • トム ジェンセン

Woo, I’m on board… I’m going to make time this summer!

  • Antoine Richardson

Oh man, I don’t know why I found this so hilarious. I laughed for a good 5 minutes..(ya know, on the inside, because other people are home)

  • http://zoomingjapan.com/ zoomingjapan

I was about to apply last year, but then I went back home for 2 weeks and I thought I’d be to busy.
This year I’ll be traveling through Japan as almost every summer for at least 2 weeks, so I’l be too busy again.
    Too bad as I fulfill all the requirements (apart from the native-like English level maybe ..) ^-^;

Good luck to everyone who’s applying!
And I vote for a female internship this year!!!!!!! :D

  • ryanlazuli

I really wish I could, but I’d be almost compeletely useless lol

  • kuyaChristian

Sent my application! I don’t know if I’m qualified enough though. I just finished my first year in college and therefore I lack on the writing experience portion even though I blog just about everyday. I gave it a shot though. I know I won’t get chosen, but I’ll say congrats in advance to those who will. :]

  • Christina Akerlund

I put in my app this morning! I am guessing we won’t hear anything until after the 7th? or are you going to let people know before then if they strike your fancy? I will be on family Vacation starting the 22nd but we are go to Washington state from Oklahoma so, if chosen… bribe of homemade cookies delivered to you so you can meet the best stay at home mom blogger ever!

(Note: my husband wants it known that he greatly objects to visiting Oregon, says the gas attendants creep him out.)

  • http://www.facebook.com/jordan.colston3 Jordan Colston

Sent my application in.  Good luck to everyone!

  • Mescale

I’d need to be paid at least 10% more than that. The deal is off!

  • kuyaChristian

Funny you said the thing about gas attendants. My family went on a roadtrip last summer and of course we had to cross Oregon. When we were about to fill up our tank, the attendant came up to us as my dad was stepping out to serve himself [we're from California] and the guy just had the scariest look on his face as if we’re some criminals or something.

In the end, they refused to give us service…

…and then I found out a month later that Oregon is one of the only two states that mandate staff to fill up someone’s tank. Oh well, ignorance was sweet.

  • トム ジェンセン

10% more then $0 is still $0, so you’re all good.

  • http://www.tofugu.com/ Hashi

Probably nothing before the 7th, no.

  • http://www.vietamins.com Viet

I’m a recent transplant here in Oregon and I still can’t get over having gas attendants fill up my tank. You are lucky though… I believe its a $5000 fine for filling up your own tank.

  • http://www.tofugu.com/ Hashi

I was born in one of those states and moved to the other. It’s the only life I’ve ever known!

  • kuyaChristian

I grew up in the Philippines and gas attendants are everywhere. I think I just forgot how it was like for someone fill up my tank since I’ve been living here in California for 8 years.
What the heck?! Really?! 5k is a hell lot. Oooh, we were lucky indeed. But then, we were ignorant tourists..I wonder if they’d give us some slack after seeing the SUV we’re driving with a California license place. O:

  • kuyaChristian

So you lived in New Jersey and Oregon? :]
