a good source for free (with premium options) is Hulu.com &/or CrunchyRoll.com.
for just paying, you can find a decent colleciton on Netflix (most are dubbed though).

other than that, find torrents (legally, of course) and check out random forums. I found a lot from a gaming community that had an anime thread.

Well, surprisingly the current Spring 2012 anime that is leading in popularity today is “Hyouka” which was produced by Kyoto Animation (Haruhi, K-On!!). And as far as I can tell this popularity surge will continue to rise much like K-On. The disturbing truth or Theory about this popularity surge is that results are manipulated by Otakus which causes imbalance in the fandom.
