Spring 2012 Anime Season Roundup

Spring is here, and with a new season comes lots of new anime for all of us to feast our eyes upon. I mean, we can’t just stare at cherry blossoms forever – we have to do something else with our spring days eventually. Just like last season (Winter 2012 in case you missed it), we have quite a few new shows on our hands here and a handful of sequels. Most are pretty average, at least two are great (one of which is Space Bros, the only anime this season to include a pug in a space suit), and there’s also a few that are complete rubbish. Which are which, you ask? Well let’s find out.

Sankarea

Sankarea is a zombie moe adolescent romantic comedy based on a manga. You with me so far? Good. So a boy who is obsessed with zombies and the occult happens upon getting involved with a girl who ends up becoming the living dead. What will happen?!!?

I think this anime would seem pretty average if not for the whole undead romantic interest thing. There’s nothing bad about the show, it just doesn’t seem as interesting as some of the other shows this season. If it sounds appealing to you though, it might be worth a shot. Who knows, it might turn out to be pretty good eventually.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1H2jEpeTNyg']

Who should watch this show: People who like romantic comedy shows centering around moe zombies.
Likelihood of me watching another episode: Not bad, but not good either. Maybe if the shows I like better so far end up not panning out so well I’ll come back to this one.

Sakamichi no Apollon

This anime has some real promise just by looking at the team behind it. Sakamichi no Apollon is set in the 1960s and tells the tale of a high school jazz band. It’s directed by the same guy who did Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, has its music done by Yoko Kanno, and is based on a Shogakukan Award-winning manga. What could go wrong?

Initially, this show (along with Space Bros) was the one I was looking forward to the most this season. I just recently started teaching myself piano as well as getting myself into jazz music, so this show really spoke to my interests right from the get go. The music is wonderful and the animation is no slouch either. Even though the story doesn’t seem that complicated just yet, the characters and everything are all presented very well. I’m excited to see how things develop.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzY6Y-AHEaw']

Who should watch this show: People who like jazz music and slice of life type animes about high school bands.
Likelihood of me watching another episode: Pretty good, I’d say. I can definitely see myself watching another episode but I’m not sure if I’ll watch it until the end. The story will have to stay pretty strong throughout.

Nazo no Kanojo X

Nazo no Kanojo is directed by the same guy doing Space Brothers this season, but boy are these shows different. This show is about a sexually frustrated teenage boy and the weird obsession he develops with a new student in his class. He ends up becoming addicted to her saliva, and convenient for him – her mouth overflows with it whenever she gets really happy so she is more than willing to spit on her finger and let him suck it off. Weird, right? I know.

Normally I wouldn’t watch a show like this all the way to the end but this show was just too weird to shut off. There were way too many wtf moments that just kept me glued to the screen. Not because I was enjoying it, but because I was overcome with appalled horror. I’m kind of terrified where this show will go with its odd sexual themes, but I’m pretty sure I don’t want to find out. Maybe somebody could just tell me what happens so I don’t actually have to watch any more of it.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ot26N18bBHk']

Who should watch this show: People who like sexually weird and more than slightly off romantic comedy anime.
Likelihood of me watching another episode: Nope, this is just too out there for me. I don’t want anymore.

Space Brothers

At last, the show we’ve all been waiting for. The show about a pug in a space suit. Space Bros takes place in the year 2025 with NASA and JAXA going to the moon on a type of practice run for the eventual colonization of Mars. It tells the tale of two brothers and their ambition to live out their dreams of going into space.

The show is definitely one of the funniest this season. I found myself laughing out loud quite a bit. But it’s like a feel-good kind of laughter and everything seems very natural. You can definitely tell it’s adapted from a highly successful manga series. I like it a lot and it makes me happy to watch. Space Bros seems very professional compared to the other animes this season, kind of like movie quality production I feel. I really like it a lot. This one definitely lives up to expectations in my opinion.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDrlh6VtglU']

Who should watch this show: People who like high quality anime involving space, ambition, dreams, and humor.
Likelihood of me watching another episode: Oh, yeah – for sure. This show is fantastic. I can’t wait to watch more.

Zetman

Zetman is the token full on action anime of the season. It seems kind of like a superhero-ish anime with the main character being a 10 year old orphan with strange superpowers. It’s bloody, violent, fast paced, and serious with lots of crazy happenings around every corner.

Unfortunately the story doesn’t really appeal to me. The action is fine, but there are just a lot of unanswered questions so far that I don’t really feel like investing the time into finding out. The action is fine, but the great lack of comedy here kind of kills it for me. Zetman just isn’t my kind of anime. I feel like it could be cool eventually, but the first episode just didn’t grab me.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9P4UPbLHu4']

Who should watch this show: People who like serious action shows with violent kid heroes.
Likelihood of me watching another episode: I’m not going to watch anymore of this. It’s just not my bag.

Tsuritama

What’s that you say? A show about fishing? Yup. That’s Tsuritama. This show revolves around the leisurely sport, but also highlights an alien and a goose as main characters. Sound intriguing to you?

Tsuritama is definitely one of the goofier shows this season, but it kind of works. The colors are brilliant and very pretty, making the show a joy to behold. The show is funny, kind of weird, and I have absolutely no idea where they are going with it. Fishing and saving the world? I can’t think of a better combination for an anime.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDc7GFWzHtM']

Who should watch this show: People who like fishing, weird alien characters, or saving the world.
Likelihood of me watching another episode: Probably. If I still want more anime after watching the shows I like better, I’ll probably come back around to this one eventually.

Jormungand

As the other action oriented anime this season, Jormungand is about guns, arms dealers, ladies with guns, action, guns, violence, and children with guns. Oh, and guns. The show has a heavy focus on gun-play and soldier type stuff but the story does not get developed very much in the first episode. The main character is a battle hardened child who ends up getting involved with a team of mercenaries and their arms dealing leader. What’s up with all the violent children this season?

As far as I’m concerned, Jormungand is a better action anime than Zetman is. I don’t really know where the story is headed, but the characters are pretty interesting and if you really like action anime, this show will probably suit you just fine. The action, animation, sound effects, and music are all great, but the lack of a gripping story lets me down here.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5FD2a9ddS4']

Who should watch this show: People who like guns, guns, and more guns.
Likelihood of me watching another episode: Doubtful. If I’m craving more action this anime season, I’ll turn to this show first though.

Accel World

Accel World does something you will very rarely see in an anime. And that is making the main character a bit of a fatty. The main character in Accel World is chubby and depressed, but soon he finds himself involved in some crazy stuff beyond his wildest dreams. The story is set way in the future and there are a lot of cool futuristic gadgets and tech to be seen here. It’s pretty cool.

But, holy crap – this show really surprised me. It’s awesome. I wasn’t expecting much from this show, but it really blew me away. The colors and animation are gorgeous, and I really enjoyed the soundtrack as well. It has a really interesting concept behind it and all the future tech is really, really cool. The end of the first episode was a crazy cliffhanger and I’m really excited to see where this show is going.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHOiqv3Xw1o']

Who should watch this show: People who like futuristic animes that are funny, exciting, and awesome.
Likelihood of me watching another episode: No doubt I’ll be watching more of this one – I might even watch them all! It’s great!

Shows That Are Really Bad And You Shouldn’t Watch

Upotte!!: This show (pictured above) is wretched. I didn’t like it right from the start. It seems very stupid and it tries to be funny, but it most definitely far from funny at all. It’s kind of inappropriate at times and no one should watch this. It’s bad. Shut if off before the 10 minute mark.

Saint Seiya Omega: I never got into the original Saint Seiya, so I didn’t have high hopes here. There were animation errors within the first 5 minutes and I shut it off within the first 10. It is dumb and boring.

Natsuiro Kiseki: It’s a really dumb slice of life girls type anime. It’s not funny and at the end of the episode they all wish they can fly and then they can fly. It’s silly. Skip it.

Ozma: I guess this show isn’t terrible, I just didn’t like it. The animation and visual style seems really dated and it just seems really boring. I couldn’t bring myself to care about it.

I also didn’t check out a handful of other anime shows this season because they didn’t really seem interesting to me and there were also a handful of sequels that I didn’t check out either.

But the bottom line this season is: Accel World and Space Brothers are awesome. Watch them. Oh and Sakamichi no Apollon might end up being pretty cool too, only time will tell.

So tell me, what are your favorite anime shows this season? Think I should check out a show I didn’t review above? Have you seen Accel World or Space Bros? How do you like them? Let me know in the comments!

  • William Sumners

Upotte? Bad? Silly boy. I’m watching that, Acchi Kocchi and Hyouka this season. I’ll watch Accel World and Medaka Box after they’ve aired.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000858852501 Luna Thalmensy

Sakamichi no Appolon & Sakarea seems really good. I’ve ever seen the 1rst episode of sakamichi and it’s so good !
I’ll try to watch Accel word too.

  • Shlomo

He tastes her a drool a bunch. Other people’s drool is tasted. It’s never really explained and… it’s just a weird guilty pleasure that I hate admitting to know about but I’d rather spare you the time that you should use instead to watch/read about the space brothers!

  • John

lol, yeah, that show is an odd one. Space Brothers sure is great though!

  • Shiri

Uchuu Kyoudai, Accel World, Jormungand, Sankarea, Fate Zero S2 and Phi Brain S2 are my current anime priorities.

  • http://twitter.com/Adrian_Med Harringui

You should know that the manga version of sankarea was way better than the anime :B jajaja

  • MangaTherapy

I think you should also mention Shirokuma (Polar Bear) Cafe. That anime is possibly the underrated hit of the Spring 2012 season. And also the new Lupin III/Fujiko anime, since a lot of people are loving it.

Right now, I’m watching ZETMAN, Rock Lee SD, Jormungand, Polar Bear Cafe. I normally don’t watch much anime, but there’s so much interesting stuff to watch this season.

  • John

I don’t think I’ve heard anything about Polar Bear Cafe – I’ll have to check it out. Thanks!

  • Kamizushi Akinari

    Oh sweet!
I read this manga a few months ago.  I didn’t know they were gonna make an anime about it.

  • John

Yeah I never heard of the manga before this, but the show is awesome!

  • mabufu

How is “unanswered questions” a bad thing, though? Keeps you watching!
Did you watch the second episode of Sankarea? I was on the fence about that anime, but episode 2 was really fantastic. The characters have really lovely chemistry. Annnnd you should really watch Hyouka! The animation is so beautiful. Both Accel World and Space Bros are two of my favourites this season. I’m also loving Sakamichi, Jormungand, Sankarea and Hyouka. Tasogare Otome is interesting enough, and Zetman is kind of cool.Worst anime of the season goes to Haiyore Nyaruko-san (couldn’t even get through the first episode) and Shiawase no Pan… except that one is sort of in the “so awful it’s fun to watch” camp.

  • http://rokuism.blogspot.com/ Roku

“It’s a really dumb slice of life girls type anime.”THAT’S your main criticism for Natsuiro Kiseki and your reason for why nobody should watch it? Wow. Thanks. You know, you do have girl readers too.

Accel World looks interesting. I haven’t been paying much attention to newer anime, but I will probably look for the first episode of that one.

  • http://twitter.com/sushimanster hoshiro-

Did you watch tasogare otomexamnesia? The preview didn’t seem good but the series is pretty awesome.

  • John

I don’t like first episodes with unanswered questions when the first ep just isn’t that great to begin with. It’s bad enough that I don’t like it, and then it’s even worse when I don’t even know what’s going on. I like shows that have really good first episodes and don’t take a handful of episodes to really “get going.” I’ve seen up through ep3 of Sankarea (where it finally starts to “get going”) and it’s okay. Definitely not my favorite, but interesting enough to keep going for a few more episodes.

  • John

I really apologize if you read that in an offensive manner. I did not mean to make it sound as though I thought all girl’s slice of life anime shows were dumb, because I like quite a few of them (Azumanga Daioh, K-On, etc) I just meant that this was one in particular that I did not enjoy. So, I am very sorry if that came out the wrong way – I didn’t mean to offend anyone.

But yeah, Accel World is really cool. I’ve seen up through ep3 so far and I’m still very interested in it.

  • John

I too thought the preview didn’t look that interesting but if you say the series is good, perhaps I will check it out. Thanks.

  • デス子

The first episode of Space Brothers contains not just one, but two Zidane headbutt references. Highly recommended.

But I’mma have’ta skip Accel World, as per my policy of not watching anything where the premise can be summed up as “average guy is a flawed loser audience stand-in, until one day, cute girls.”

  • John

lol, that’s fair. I like it mostly because of the cool tech ideas and pretty colors, but we’ll see how long the story can stand up.

  • Ash28

Acchi Kocchi is probably my favourite this season… but I’m enjoying Tsuritama and Accel World as well, along with a few others.

  • http://twitter.com/shollum Shollum

Natsuiro Kiseki will have it’s fans (as long as they don’t get trolled) if you get my drift. It’s actually the only thing I got around to watching so far.

Accel World (the manga anyway) was pretty good, so I’ll probably watch it soon.

Sankarea… Well, moe zombies are moe zombies after all! I’ve read what exists of the manga and it’s pretty good, so I’ll probably watch it too.

  • http://twitter.com/shollum Shollum

Yeah. I read some of the manga and… Well, lets just say I’m not reading it anymore. It got too creepy.

  • hashimoto

I agree with your top picks and would add Furusato Saisei: Nihon no Mukashi Banashi. Although it’s more of a storybook narration, the folktales are a good cultural education that will help one appreciate the parodies in other anime.

  • デス子

     Inconceivably better.

  • http://www.tofugu.com/ Hashi

I never thought that “rom zom com” would be a genre that went beyond Shaun of the Dead.

  • John

    Also known as romantic zombedies.

  • http://www.facebook.com/MollyHouse Molly House

Medeka box, what a let down, the PVs got me super excited but it’s just so zarking bad. I like SS Omega, I think it’s a great classic throwback, it’s not really breaking any new ground but it’s got decent action.
I really like Mysterious G/F X, The spit thing does gross me out, but it’s a good love story with some good humor.

EDIT: +1 for upotte being horrible unwatchable filth crap.

  • Rich

Watching Medaka Box which I’m really liking so far. I’ve been thinking about checking out Accel World, I’ll definitely have to  watch a couple episodes soon. Usually I’m up for anything with zombies, but I’m not even really interested in Sankarea for some reason.

  • John

Yeah, I watched Sankarea up through ep3 and it’s okay. I doubt I’ll finish it.

  • http://twitter.com/Landorien Lan

しろくまカフェ is quite obviously the best show of the season!

    http://youtu.be/Ma8wXV-gQvg

  • ZXNova

I kinda agree with you on upotte. It’s too weird. I’m not really into ecchi anime.

  • ZXNova

    Sh*t Otaku say.

  • デス子

Man, what’s with all the hate for Upotte!!? I mean, the title is the Japanese word for gun, but it’s spelled backwards! Cleverness like that automatically puts in on par with Troll 2.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000959860450 Martha Velazquez

I’m really liking Tsuritama… The first episode really caught my eye what with all the colors and surreal comedy. Acchi Kocchi and Accel World are definitely on my list this season too.

  • Wiggity

I’m going to step outside of the box and suggest a non Japanese anime *gasp*.

Series 2 of Avatar is out very soon (titled “The Legend of Korra”) and it looks very promising. Also, if you have yet to watch the first series (Avatar: the last airbender), I highly recommend that you do, it is one of the most entertaining animes to be released in a long time.

  • Rich

Thanks for the nudge to watch Accel World! I really like it so far.

  • デス子

Ohhhhh… I already used up my “Sh*t Otaku Say” reference! How am I supposed to respond to THIS?

  • John

    Awesome, glad to hear it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=607790802 Alex Napoli

    ルパン三世:峰不二子という女
I don’t think there are a lot of people out there that know about Lupin III (I don’t know why?!), but I always liked that series and the new one is very…mature. Great art direction too!
Space Brothers and Sakamichi no Apollon have been good so far.

  • John

I knew about it but didn’t check it out because I never got into Lupin. Glad to hear you’re enjoying Space Bros and Sakamichi no Apollon though!

  • Mescale

That Space Bros image really reminds me of Planetes.

  • Joseph Goforth

I generally give shows 3 or 4 episodes.  If they don’t hook me by that point, they are unwatched.  22 minutes is not a lot of time for a first episode to really set everything up it may need to for a lot of series. glad you mentioned Sakamichi no Aporon,  i’d forgotten about that show.  Shinchiro Watanabe is one of my favorites, not only for the shows but for his excellent musical direction in them as well.

  • Hoshiro-

Somewhat. It’s not really the best, but it’s fairly interesting to me. Try watching the second episode, maybe you’ll like it better.

  • Sultana Ali

The best anime in my opinion are Tsuritama and Polarbear Cafe! Accel World looks great too. Gonna have to check that one out!

  • Sebastian

Guys, I’m new to this blog and Anime. So… where exactly can I watch these Anime?  Where does an otaku get her/his Anime from?

  • Shlomo

I wish I could say the same, but I’m still reading it haha

  • http://twitter.com/Adrian_Med Harringui

    haha yeah

  • SageShinigami

No mention of Lupin III?   The animation style is amazing and the first couple episodes were plain genius.  Took a slight nosedive in quality with episode 4, but it’s still head and shoulders above most series this season.

And I say this as someone who never finished a single full series.

This was a pretty good article all around, even if my tastes and the author’s don’t mix all that well.  (I couldn’t sit through two minutes of Space Brothers without falling asleep.  Not bad, just not my type of series.)

  • Dbzgirl311

space bros is awesome, I can’t wait to see the next episode.  There’s also a live action movie of it in Japan but I don’t think it’s out of the cinimas yet

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

    AHHH

  • spacesplaces

Sakamichi no Apollon is turning out to be one of the best this season and quite possibly the year.
