I read about yaeba in a News of the Weird column in a local newspaper last year and was pleasently surprised that there’s a segment of the population that thinks my twisted teeth are cute (especially since every dentist I’ve ever had is practically salivating at the chance to drill them back into place). I’d really like to see a Tofugu article explaining this new gem on Japan’s Crown of Weirdness.

Well, clearly the number 48 is in reference to the number of teeth in an average adult’s mouth, times the number of girls in the group, and then divided by 2, because, hey, why not? As you can see, it is a very original name that is the complete opposite of a cash in. A… cheque… out… I guess.

Why not? Its not so much a good thing, as a cute thing, and that makes it desirable in Japan (Japan likes cute). Its just like large breasts, high cheekbones or a shapely nose in the west, and now you can get implants!

I guess as long as it doesn’t do any harm then its … harmless, just like any cosmetic surgery.
