Great post. I was on a flight to Japan when the earthquake struck and we had to do a 180. I still flew back the next day :) since my plans were the southern part of Japan.

From what I see on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Katrina#Non-governmental_organization_response and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humanitarian_response_to_the_2011_T%C5%8Dhoku_earthquake_and_tsunami#Non-governmental_responses), non government groups donated well over a couple billion for both New Orleans and Touhoku.
