Do’h. Smart.fm Is Closing Down And Going Paid (And Stealing All Your Content, Too)

Do’h. Smart.fm is closing down, and taking your content with it (holy crap, I made a lot for them, including a good amount of semi-pro audio, which I paid someone for). Well, they’re only kinda-sorta closing down. The parent company, Cerego is ending the Smart.fm service and rebranding it as “iKnow” (wait… hasn’t this happened before… like twice?) and slapping a monthly fee on there.

Pardon The Opinion-Piece / Rant

So, I’m going to write a bit of an opinion-ish editorial-ish rant-ish piece here. Not sure how else to do it. I feel sort of… betrayed?

It’s not because Smart.fm shouldn’t be a paid service… it probably should be. They should have done this a long time ago. My feeling of betrayal is a long term thing, that started over a year ago. Here’s my own personal timeline with Smart.fm… or should I say, iKnow? Hmm, iDon’tKnow…

I discovered iKnow.co.jp (Smart.fm was originally known as iKnow, which is what they’re turning back into now). It was awesome. Probably one of the coolest knives in the knife drawer, so to speak. I loved the heck out of them. They were great.

I kept liking them, but then they switched to Smart.fm. They were still good though.

Then, they got a new UI designer (or something, I don’t know what happened), and everything became hard to use. Things started breaking/sucking, and nothing worked as well as it used to. For learners and people creating content, things just weren’t as easy as they used to be. Someone ruined it, and I don’t know the details. I just know Smart.fm slowly got harder and harder to use (actually it got even worse than this, but keep reading).

I met with one of the co-founders in San Francisco, when he was visiting / talking with people (possibly for investments?). I won’t tell you which one, because I like the guy. We talked about all kinds of things, but one thing that sticks out was his promise that Smart.fm would always be free. Ads? Definite probability… White labeling? Perhaps… but never a pay-to-use kind of program. Whoops. I guess that wasn’t actually his decision to make. We even met regarding a deal that would give him a lot of free content. Good thing it fell through, otherwise that particular content would have been their free content they could now charge for.

Things kept getting worse with the UI. It got harder to create content. It used to take almost no time to create cards… now it takes forever. Things not only loaded slow, but they added a ton of unnecessary steps in order for me to get something set up, making it hard to get things done. Other people started noticing this. For some reason, I had faith that it would get better, yet it only kept getting worse.

I start hearing from various (secret… ahem) contacts about problems from within Smart.fm – the engineers don’t respect the management. The management don’t really understand how to work with engineers. The engineers just kind of do what they want, there is no direction, and nothing gets done. In the meantime, however, Smart.fm raises a ton of money (because their executives, while not good at managing engineers, do happen to be good at raising a lot of money). I hear more and more about how working at Smart.fm isn’t all that great… and when your engineers aren’t happy and they don’t respect you, that’s never a good sign…

Then, things started breaking. My content (which was awesome, and now is kind of broken) started getting mixed up weirdly. Audio would shift around seemingly at random, pairing the wrong audio with the wrong word (audio that either I recorded or paid someone to record for me). My example sentences were getting switched out with other, somewhat correct but mostly incorrect, sentences. Basically, some algorithm on the back end was making me look like an idiot. I would try to fix things as fast as possible, but new problems appeared as fast as I could fix the old ones. This really sucked. This is when I realized it was time to come up with an alternative for TextFugu, which used Smart.fm a lot (all lists I created).

Then, bam, this news hit. Smart.fm is closing down and is becoming iKnow (again). I’m not upset about this because they decided to go to a paid model. Sure, I was promised this would never happen, but I definitely saw this happening at some point. I’m irritated because of the slow, painful process that took place to get to this point. The lowering of quality… the breakage… the lack of support for all the breakage… it goes on and on.

Sure, I’ll have to switch all my TextFugu flashcard content over to something else (some of it already is, thankfully), but I’m hoping that will be a blessing in disguise. I’ll have more control over my own flashcard content, and that will be nice. Still, I’ve had faith in Smart.fm for way too long, even when others had long given up on them. This, however, is my breaking point.

So, I guess it’s time to put down the Smart.fm torch (it doesn’t exist anymore, anyways) and pick up something else. Anki’s good, you should try that.

So, what do you think about all this mumbo-jumbo of Smart.fm changing to iKnow (again) and switching to a pay model? For me, I think it’s smart they’re going paid. They should have done that from the start. But… for me, Smart.fm’s quality has just gone down way too far, and I’ve stuck with them for way too long. It’s time for me to let go and turn to something else. What about you?

I found out about it on Lang-8 from reading a Japanese person’s blog in English. I think they said they were surprised and didn’t know what to do. I got the feeling they were going to ditch Smart.FM just like many of us.

Can someone explain 2 things please?
    1) If you made content that Cerego will profit from then why aren’t you using your free login to iKnow (until March 31st) to delete or sabotage your content?
    2) Smart.FM had lots of copywritten material such as vocab lists and other content from published text books like Minna no Nihongo. I guess it was dubious before but now Cerego is going to make money from material that someone else copied from a published book. Doesn’t that leave them wide open to legal action from the publishers?
BONUS: you’ve re-read the licence agreement that you agreed to when creating a Smart.FM account right?

For me, this news are very sad and disappointing, because I was just starting to use Smart.fm, and I don´t have money to pay for the new service. I´m gonna try to use Anki, thank you Koichi for the information about anki, and I will keep reading your blog.

  • http://twitter.com/forgottenmems Janelle

I’ve checked out Renshuu.com I was disappointed by the fact that they won’t show you any kanji at first without verifying that you “familiar” with it. I also don’t like the fact that it looks a bit 98-ish. Maybe I’ll get over it. I love the fact that it has a strong community and some game-like features such as a points system.

I don’t care for Quizlet much even though it reminds me the most of Smart.FM in terms of word review, games, and graphics. The user content is pretty basic stuff and when they do give kanji for words, the answer appears in English or in romaji (not kana like I’d prefer).

Read the Kanji.com is one of those sites that I really want to love. I’m trying to warm up to it, since it’s free for me because I was an early adopter thus grandfathered in. It’s alittle stiff on the community/game like features part. The flashcard review of vocab kind of feels like a game, but not that much. The thing that turned me away from it onto Smart.FM in the first place was the fact that when you enter the romanization which is converted into kana, you must know your “rows” well because you can’t just enter “tsu” as shown. I just had a hard time doing that so I always got stuff “wrong” that I knew.

I’ve tried to use Anki over and over again, but I just can’t get into it. I always feel unsure about how well I know a word; making it harder to rate it. Even if I do know the word I somehow feel queasy about making any decision on it. Soon, I start to dread studying in this form and quit trying to do review any deck I start. What I liked about Smart.FM compared to Anki is that you just know the word or you don’t and you visually see your progress with a bar and percentage level. Also, Anki doesn’t have any “game-like” element to it. Futhermore, with Anki you see the content ONE way, you rate it, with Smart.FM you saw it a couple different ways (pairing kanji to an English word, pairing kanji to kana, recall by writing the word in kana after hearing/seeing it in a sentence).

It’s just majorly disappointing that Smart.FM won’t be around anymore because it was such a motivating tool for me. I don’t know much about how “horrible” it was to create content because I never created anything so that aspect of Smart.FM never bugged me like it does for some.

Against my better judgement, I almost want to pay for iKnow because in a very short time I’ve seen tremendous success with Smart.FM. I recognize some kanji/words much better than before. Although the issue is, I think it’s a complete rip off to be honest. I’ve tried it the free trial at iKnow a bit and think as the website stands now, it’s inferior to Smart.FM.

Seriously, I’m not sure what to do anymore. Only time will tell. At least Lang-8 is still free (although that’s more for cementing what I already know)

Well, I like the way it looks, other than the bio thing. Maybe I’ll just edit my bio. I haven’t updated it in a while anyway. I think I noticed because I use Disqus on my blog as well. I have for quite a while.

  • http://www.bradleyfarless.com/ Brad F.

I’ll check out Anki, though I’ve had to push learning Japanese to the back burner for now anyway. I’m about to go back to college full time to finish my anthropology degree and then get my master’s. I think I’ll be putting a lot of effort into that. I want to be at, or near, the top of my class.

  • aderow

This is pretty upsetting. A little over 6 months ago I found it now its closing down. I’m glad I got use it as it was helpful but I guess I will have to move on…

  • Tomhogers

    Do’h koichi,

What’s up with the EduFire link, on their page it states:

    “Japanese Classes

Sorry, we currently don’t offer classes in Japanese”

As for lKnow, iKnew you Knew that iKnow’d be back, but ididn’tKnow you Knew it’d be back as paid iKnow. Now iKnow.

    Thanks for letting us iKnow.

    Cheers,

    Tom

  • Janett

Honestly, you should leave all your content up until 2-3 days before the closing date, just out of spite. We’ll be able to study as much as we can while its free and you can make sure they don’t make any money off YOUR hard work.

  • ccccc

Unfortunately it looks like user created content is already migrated over, plus i’m assuming they have backups of all our files.

  • Sad

It sucked. I wish it would fail big time due to this greedy move.

Can’t you just delete the decks/content you made?

I can, but then people using them now can’t use them. Probably will delete
everything after I finish transferring, though I have a feeling they have
    backups of everything I’ve made…. :(

I agree. I used to love Smart.fm/iKnow (found out about them from your site ages ago) but the new interface is just so buggy and cumbersome. Not to mention the failed iPhone app– I was really disappointed in that one. I still occasionally visit the site as a resource to hear audio clips. But even that is becoming troublesome, because they have all these auto generated Text to Speech voices now. For those of you who want to hear natural audio examples of native speakers pronouncing words for free, I highly recommend Forvo.com as an alternative. I also second the recommendation of Anki, to handle your flash card reviews. You can include your own audio, and even set it up to prompt you to type out the answer. Readthekanji.com is another alternative, although it doesn’t have any audio.

I have no problem paying for Smart.fm. I do have a problem paying 1000 yen per month! Thats more than a Premium membership at JapanesePod101.com that has WAY more useful stuff. :(

  • http://twitter.com/lightningatdusk Ryan W

There’s a plugin for Anki called “Smart.fm Import Lists” that let’s you import Smart.fm cards into your Anki decks… I’d suggest grabbing your cards before you can’t use them any more!

  • Barbpj

Smart.fm apparently stopped providing public API last August, so that plugin won’t work anymore. This info is from the Anki program itself.

I guess Smart.fm was planning this way back in August, ’10 and so stopped the plugin from working. Dirty birds.

  • Anonymous

Since, I never heard about Smart.fm until I joined TextFugu I can’t speak for how it used to be and can only comment on what I experienced.

When practicing / studying on Smart.fm and even now on iKnow, I noticed that instead of giving me a Japanese kana to guess it just gives me the answer to type back in. I mean, geez, obviously an error in the back end, but seriously!!! If you’re going to go to a paid model by all means do what you have to do, but if it’s going to be paid, at least get the thing working right. @#$%

I noticed when they changed their input format that it was starting to go downhill. When I first started using it, you could just add words without changing pages and loading and a whole lot of nonsense. I still used it when the interface changed, but only when I had to study hardcore for a test since using it for day to day stuff took more time to input than it did to learn. I even recommended it to the sophomores I was tutoring in Japanese.

I doubt I’ll use it now. I’m not going to pay for a broken and finicky interface. I’d pay for the old one, but not for this nonsense.

  • ara bo bara fee fi fo fara

KOICHI! I have discovered (or already knew) about another site that is (in my opinion) BETTER THEN ANKI AND SMART.FM

It is http://www.quizlet.com/ :D This is also a flashcard site that you can use to study with in any subject! You can check other people’s cards and make your own for FREE!
*I will say that you can upgrade to premium which means you can be in over 10 groups but I don’t think its worth it. just favorite your favorite sets of cards.

However, on this site you can also play games to study your words and it automatically gives audio for your Japanese section if you are making cards (the pronunciation is pretty good).
If I were you, I’d try this site out. I also use it for my spanish classes. >-<

I think you speak for a lot of us users who used Smart.fm frequently and made content to help others out. Everything you said mirrors my feelings exactly. But the one thing that makes me most mad is how they can take the content that we’ve helped to produce and then expect us to pay a premium for it. iKnow is exploiting its users.

  • http://wiredinjapan.blogspot.com/ ryanthewired

Even if you delete the lists you created, I imagine that all your text and audio contributions will remain in their system for them to use as they please.

  • http://wiredinjapan.blogspot.com/ ryanthewired

What happens when you need to pay for food or rent? Will studying really be that important? How about next year? It takes a while to learn a language.

  • http://twitter.com/ImaginaryJapan Joe Munro

I actually ditched smart.fm/iknow quite a long time ago. After they switched smart.fm became really slow and I just didn’t use it as often. I switched over to Anki (I had already been using it, but at this time I switched completely) and tried to convince a lot of other people to do the same. It’s simply a quicker, better functioning program. I bought the ipod app and I don’t regret it at all despite its somewhat high cost. Damien is super nice and will respond to any emails you send him. I was really surprised when I actually started getting emails back (and he responds very quickly as well).

I feel like it’s kind of wrong to take all of our content and start charging money for it out of seemingly nowhere, and I’m not the only one. Read through these comments. Lots of used smart.fm and very few of us will pay for it. I think it’s going to die out for good.

  • Shinmanotenchuu

Some people from smart.fm have started a group at facebook. Seems like trying to keep a community active, is the goal. ;P -smart.fm refugees, aiming for higher learning and looking for ones of their own.

Excuse the language but F@*^ a Duck! Man am I tired of trying to support these people. I’ve been using them for 2 or 3 years now… I even stayed with them after they became Smart.FM and started having all the issues you mentioned. I was finding it rather hard when I picked it up again (I’m one of those learn then stop, learn then stop, type of people) and was starting to wonder what had happened. Now that you’ve told me what happened, the difficulties all make sense.

I don’t mind paying for a product that will help, but I am not going to be paying for Smart.FM/IKnow… they had my trust and they lost it. End of Story. I’d rather pay someone I know deserves the money… like our good friend Koiichi via Text-Fugu.

  • http://www.wideislandview.com Fish

This really REALLY annoys me. iKnow was a great service. And I don’t mind going as far as to say that it SHOULD have remained free to use. Cerego has STOLEN a lot of user-created content. I’m trying to figure out a way to remove or at least sabotage some of the content that I have created over the last five years on iKnow & Smart.fm. So so annoying.

  • http://twitter.com/Musouka Musouka

Smart.fm will be operational (and iKnow will be free) until the end of the fiscal year (March 31, 2011). I would have liked more time but I guess two months isn’t that bad.

  • http://twitter.com/fembassist Jenny

I agree that the old iKnow was a lot better before they started changing everything, but then I got used to the new drill beta. Since the new drill beta is actually based on an amount of time and not items, it actually was better for me because I may only want to put in 5 min of study but do as much as possible during that time. Other times I may want to devote a full 30 min or whatever.

The whole study time was just confusing. It seemed to me if you put in a goal date the goal would only give you the new or uncompleted items. It would never let you finish by that date and you had to keep changing it. If you took it out then the app would give you all items due to be studied.

As for being a paid site, they should have done a basic and premium services. Hell, even charging for the iPhone app would have been a good start to see how much income they would have gotten from it.

@koichi – I hope you can find some way to get your content back online for those users who used the goals. I actually liked the transitive and intransitive goal you made.

  • http://twitter.com/Musouka Musouka

The new iKnow seems to be even more crippled than the current Smart.fm. At least currently. Maybe because they are giving free trials to all Smart.fm members. At the moment, you can only search for official courses. No user-created content is available. Maybe that’s a good thing? I mean they are at least not taking advantage of people’s effort… yet.

  • http://twitter.com/Musouka Musouka

Oh, never mind…. I didn’t notice the “See user-created courses” under search XD

I don’t know how I feel about them going paid really. I do think right now what they have listed is a tad too much. I know other places, like JapanesePod101 that do it a little less than that. But there are other fish in the sea.

I remember signing up for another site that has gotten a lot better since I originally left it for iKnow, and I guess I’ll be going back. I suggest you guys check it out as well and see if it suits you.

thought smart.fm was brilliant when i discovered it: automated self learning *and* social tools for motivation and material collaboration. too bad it’s not free software, but at least it’s free beer. now i think smart.fm is dishonest: it’s users provided huge feedback, publicity, and actual *content* – all of which is being stolen in exchange for one month free service (~$12). i hope this move earns the negative publicity it deserves. thank goodness for anki!

  • Anonymous

You can still download the smart.fm core 2000 1-10 series. I just did today, and there is a few more smart.fm bits that are still available for download… grab it while it’s good ;)

  • Michael

It should have been for-pay all along. For people who are serious about their studies, iKnow is well worth it. Decline in popularity does not matter: as long as people who come there to study find it is worth it and the service can sustain itself, it was the right thing to do for them.

All the “alternatives that come to replace them” will quickly learn that if you offer something for free, it is extremely painful to charge later to sustain the service. And if you cannot sustain the service, why start it in the first place.

  • Michael

Somehow Anki author figured his work was good enough to start charging for after a couple of years. See The Price section at http://bit.ly/hUzX1t — good like to idealists who want great software for free, forever.

  • Michael

Because they offered a good service and running it isn’t free? And come on, there were a few very active contributors who created good lists but vast majority of community-contributed content has poor quality. Trust me, I’ve spend more than a year there studying 4 languages over that time.

mats, please try running a donation-based service and see what % is going to donate (and how much those who don’t are going to ask you for). You will be surprised.

Smart.fm does not get the credit they deserve. Good luck finding a good service that is free forever. Oh, wait, Anki author says his time & effort better be compensated, too? — http://bit.ly/hUzX1t — something just isn’t right in the “knowledge should always be free” Universe. Knowledge should be free, but not effort of people who maintain and develop all these tools.

  • Michael

Really? And running all the servers & developing tools & paying people who maintain all that will be paid by who? Aliens? These aliens better come here quick.

Grow up, Pedro. Running a good service is not free. Maintaining a popular service is a ton of work and you’ll also get a ton of shit from people who don’t want to pay you yet want everything to be perfect and free forever. Please.

I was so upset last night when I saw the news after going to log on to the site. I had been using smart.fm for a while. Since September, I began to put up lists of vocabulary words from my workbook, and now its like they’re taking it from me. They’re forcing me and my little study bugs to pay for all the hard work I did.

As soon as I finished reading about the changes I came here to see if you would know something about it, and you did :) I feel a lot better now, but I still feel a little cheated. I will start using an alternative after I finish adding the content to the site. If people have to pay to study the lists I made, then I should at least finish loading all the content on there for the first workbook.

I would have no problem paying for using the site if I hadn’t encountered so many problems with it. How do they expect me to pay for something that has been so troublesome? Its a great site, I’m just not willing to pay for it until I see some positive changes.

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

    Just the iPhone app?

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

If you read the article, I agree – should have been paid all along. That’s not what I’m bitching about.

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

There’s also the emotional attachment people have to their own lists, whether or not they’re “good” or not for you. People created these things for themselves so they can learn. Now Smart.fm will profit off of them, whether or not they’re good or not to others….

I also don’t think it’s a viable solution to do donations, especially for a web app that’s been degrading in quality over the last year, but why not a freemium model? Seems like it would fit more with what they originally wanted to do.

Considering I answered this question for mats (which was directed at me), and you’ve written a few comments like this… trolling much?

yeah its just the iphone app

the android app seems to be free, and the dektop application ist free as usual.
