Mixi No Longer Requires an Invite. edu Loophole Still Works!

Just after I post about getting past the Mixi blockade by using a .edu address, Mixi shakes things up and I thought they closed up the .edu loophole. [UPDATE] Turns out, it still works, and the best part is, you don’t need to ask for a Mixi invite anymore. You can register all by yourself.

The Good News

Mixi has switched from being an invite-only service to being an “anyone-can-join” service. That means now anyone can join, as long as you’re using the workaround. Otherwise, you have to be Japanese / in Japan.

The Bad News

Well, there is no real bad news now that I’ve gotten word that you can use the workaround to register for Mixi yourself. Very cool.

What This Means

1. You can try to join anytime you want now.

2. My fingers won’t hurt so much sending all those replies and invites and so on!

3. You don’t have to write me a poem to get an invite. Sad for me, good for you.

Solutions?

Originally I had to offer some solutions for getting into Mixi, but no solutions necessary. Only the ol’ Mixi workaround, which should get you in.

So, no more need to leave sad comments in the comment section. Everyone be happy now and add me as a friend (just be warned I am super slow about processing friend requests).

Update: This loophole does not work anymore. The black ship has failed. Retreat! Retreat!

    Yep, you do need a friend to access communities apparently (sad!). I might have to do my monthly Mixi go-through sooner rather than later, so you can have a friend! :)

    By the way, thought I would add that they only like education emails and keitai/mobile emails because they want to stop people from having multiple accounts (presumably to try and stop people from stalking, spamming etc)
    There's a help/info message somewhere in the top right during sign-up which states it ^^;
    So I don't think it's to stop gaijin/outsiders/foreigners as such; I think it's more to protect the community/site from being taken over by creepy people (like myspace, facebook and twitter – yey for old people, little kids, porn bots and spam bots adding me..? >_>)

    I gave up and started a blog in fc2 until the news about mixi going invitation-free came outxD

    I'm confused. I tried to sign up with my uni email address, without an invite, but I still need a mobile phone email O.o

    Let's say this way, I've got the australia.edu addy and thenby using an japanese proxy-server tried to create an account at mixi. Yet I'm getting the 3rd step… So I would say, yes..the hole isn't a hole anymore. (OR I should choose “japan” as my country and not germany…haven't tried it yet)

    Have you even read the whole thread here? I mean, it says clearly that invites are not needed anymore but yet you ask for one, I don't get the sense of it :)

    I registered and I'm filling in the information. As of my name, both first and last, should I type it down as Katakana or just write it down with Roman letters?
    And for the location, I put “foreign” and chose “America”. Good idea? Or should I go for a Japanese prefecture and place?
    And what should I put for my Nickname? It said something about 10-byte characters.

    And you can't even give them a friend's keitai address, unless your friend doesn't have or want a Mixi account of his own.

    Apparently Mixi decided to remove my account as I just tried to login and they state that my account does not exist.

    No warning mail, no nothing. Just gone…

    A bit weird, but I suppose I did not have enough friends or whatever.
    I do think that they could at least have send me a message stating that foreign bums are not welcome ;-)

    It doesnt work anymore, i have an australia.edu but it no longer allows it to get past because it brings me straight to the cellphone page.

    Same here. They sent me an e-mail saying they'd delete my account if I didn't have enough friends but I tried to make a new account with australia.edu and it brings me right to the cell phone page as the final step. (sigh) oh well…

    I can get an invite, but i keep getting screwed in step three cause they want a keitai mail. But my keitai mail address ends in i.softbank.jp

    Any recommendations?

    Sad panda, I made an account fine a month ago (see my post above), wanted to use it today, found they had deleted it because I had no friends, and yeah now the process no longer works. It no longer skips the step 3. :(

    And even if someone invites you now, you still get step 3? Jeez.

    man, this no longer works. like the other guy said here, login in is impossible now. seems like they found out and deleted my account. i didn't make friends yet on that account. they gave me no warning. geez, bunch a of b*tches . seriously, don't waste your breath on the mixi website.

    The black ship has returned! I used my college e-mail XXXXXXXX@pdx.edu and it worked just fine, I filled out the account creation details and am now filling out my mixi profile! I repeat, the black ship is still alive!

    Did you click the link that mixi sends you to your e-mail account? Once you go through that link and finish second step and continue on, it skips the 3rd step (cellphone) and brings you to the edit profile page and from there you're in free waters, provided you manage to get a friend added within a week…
