Mixi No Longer Requires an Invite. edu Loophole Still Works!

Just after I post about getting past the Mixi blockade by using a .edu address, Mixi shakes things up and I thought they closed up the .edu loophole. [UPDATE] Turns out, it still works, and the best part is, you don’t need to ask for a Mixi invite anymore. You can register all by yourself.

The Good News

Mixi has switched from being an invite-only service to being an “anyone-can-join” service. That means now anyone can join, as long as you’re using the workaround. Otherwise, you have to be Japanese / in Japan.

The Bad News

Well, there is no real bad news now that I’ve gotten word that you can use the workaround to register for Mixi yourself. Very cool.

What This Means

1. You can try to join anytime you want now.

2. My fingers won’t hurt so much sending all those replies and invites and so on!

3. You don’t have to write me a poem to get an invite. Sad for me, good for you.

Solutions?

Originally I had to offer some solutions for getting into Mixi, but no solutions necessary. Only the ol’ Mixi workaround, which should get you in.

So, no more need to leave sad comments in the comment section. Everyone be happy now and add me as a friend (just be warned I am super slow about processing friend requests).

Update: This loophole does not work anymore. The black ship has failed. Retreat! Retreat!

    Just wanted to let you know that the loophole still works! I just tried registering with my .edu e-mail and I got in with no cell phone e-mail address. ^_^

    I was lucky to get a quick reply from both australia.edu as from you (bet it was my awesome poem that helped, lol) So I got my Mixi account just in time. I can't read shit at all yet, it's nice for future study help tho.

    well loophole still works but, i gave them $25 bucks, to get the edu email address and they
    still havent gotten back to me, so if they dont it soon, i will be out of luck, but such is life
    sometimes….

    You get a confirmation to sign up to your @k.ro mail and then…you crack at the Japanese mobile phone part…damn!

    I'm having trouble registering.
    I have an .edu email address, which I got an invite sent to… but it still tells me I need to enter a Japanese keitai address (on step 3).
    How do I get around that?

    It seems the loophole is really closed. I've the same problem, beetween the choosing options there isn't a mail address .edu…It doesn't work.

    huh, I should probably fix that… been meaning to make it stand out more anyways. You actually have to click “Posts” next to the RSS button, which is totally stupid and is a terrible UI choice. On my list of to-dos now :)

    Aha, I see. While waiting for my australia.edu to be green lit I had started the registration process with my regular gmail account, which ended in that step 3 that you can't get past (I thought this is where it would want the .edu one).

    30mins later my .edu account was opened and I tried starting the reg process over with that instead, and this time there was no step 3. And I now have a mixi account. So it still works fine.

    It works only when you enter the xxx@australia.edu email address at step#1. Once you receive your link from @australia.edu inbox, click on it and you will see the page to enter your info. HOWEVER, you will still see the 'Step#3' at the top as part of your registration. Once you complete the step#2, Mixi will skip the step#3 for you. You will be all set!

    Just tried my xxxxxx(at)students.xxxxxx.ac.uk email and it let me skip the 3rd step (: now I can change it to my gmail or whatever ^^

    ok, question for you. I put in my school's .edu email address but mixi doesn't send any kind of verification link to it. why is that?

    @@@ ハービー Maybe you didnt recieve anything cuz most .edu email have really good spam blockers or specified filters so you can only get email from certain domains. Try the australia.edu method :) works fine

    I registered with my university .edu and it gets stuck at step 3. Won't let me go past without a reply from a keitei. Oh well…

    Can you tell me why Mixi is not letting me search for communities properly? I click on the community search link and it takes me to a beginners page. This is the notice on the page: http://i42.tinypic.com/9r6t75.jpg

    I assume it has something to do with having no friends added yet (though I'm still waiting for my request to you to go through ;).
