Mixi No Longer Requires an Invite. edu Loophole Still Works!

Just after I post about getting past the Mixi blockade by using a .edu address, Mixi shakes things up and I thought they closed up the .edu loophole. [UPDATE] Turns out, it still works, and the best part is, you don’t need to ask for a Mixi invite anymore. You can register all by yourself.

The Good News

Mixi has switched from being an invite-only service to being an “anyone-can-join” service. That means now anyone can join, as long as you’re using the workaround. Otherwise, you have to be Japanese / in Japan.

The Bad News

Well, there is no real bad news now that I’ve gotten word that you can use the workaround to register for Mixi yourself. Very cool.

What This Means

1. You can try to join anytime you want now.

2. My fingers won’t hurt so much sending all those replies and invites and so on!

3. You don’t have to write me a poem to get an invite. Sad for me, good for you.

Solutions?

Originally I had to offer some solutions for getting into Mixi, but no solutions necessary. Only the ol’ Mixi workaround, which should get you in.

So, no more need to leave sad comments in the comment section. Everyone be happy now and add me as a friend (just be warned I am super slow about processing friend requests).

Update: This loophole does not work anymore. The black ship has failed. Retreat! Retreat!

    Hmm…no clue, if it helps any, when I was creating my account I put my location as Tokyo, Meguro and my name in katakana, I don't know if that's ultimately what got me to skip the 3rd step or not though.

    I'm guessing they probably specifically blocked australia.edu addresses, as I registered two accounts today with a different .edu no problem.

    bleh i got an australia.edu email address and it still does not work. i tried my school's edu email but even though there was no firewall up when i tried to register for mixi the email didnt come from them

    thank you koichi for this tuturial to get in mixi. but for me it’s not working. i’ve completed the mixi application but on the third step it ask me for this f**kin mobile phone number.
    I’m studying japanese language for 3 years and i try to go in japan as often as possible. But i really want to have an account in mixi to share languages with japanese people.
    Have you another solution to get in ? now, i’ve an edu mail address but that’s not efficient.

    Koichii, Mixi is working with .edu email addresses. I clicked “sign up,”
    entered my college .edu email address, Mixi sent me an email
    confirmation, I clicked the confirmation, entered my date of birth,
    gender, region, etc, and my profile was complete. There is no cellphone
    email address or anything. I live in california in the U.S. if anyone is
    interested. Hope you all can make an account.

    man this sucks, my company only provide .org email addresses , i don’t think that will work, for the good souls out there who have a mixi account please hook me up with one, i want to leave facebook so badly that is not funny, i can’t even stand it!
