How To Listen To Japanese Music For Free

Of course, there are plenty of ways to *cough* get Japanese music for free, but here is one legit method I’ve been using for a little over a year now, and it works really well. That being said, I’m not much of a music buff, so I have no idea what I like listening to (usually it’s not Japanese music, to be perfectly honest), but I know there are plenty of you out there jonesing to get your hands on more Japanese music, find new bands, etc., especially since iTunes makes it hard for non-Japanese-living folk to buy Japanese music (and CD prices are just plain outrageous).

The service I use to listen to and get access to new music (or, in my case, lots of really old classical music) is Last.fm. There’s a competing product out there, Pandora, but to be honest, I’m not a fan of their user interface. I like last.fm’s desktop app, and I like how there’s always a ton of information on the song / band that’s playing available at my fingertips. Plus, it’s a lot easier to use, and integrates some nice social elements (which I don’t use).

Last.fm is an “internet radio” service, which means it’s more like an actual radio as opposed to playing whatever you want on iTunes, though there are some things that give you a little more control over what you listen to (and more importantly, what you don’t want to listen to). Although you can’t actually play specific songs in most cases, you can listen to “stations” that you create either based around an artist or tag. So, for example, if I wanted to listen to artists similar to Orange Range, I’d type that in and my Last.fm radio would play songs by artists similar to Orange Range (or songs by Orange Range themselves). Conversely, if I wanted to put in a tag, I could put something like “Japanese” in there to listen to music that’s been tagged with the word “Japanese.” For example, here are the first ten songs I got when using this tag (Japanese):

  1. How Beautiful by 土岐麻子
  2. Morning After by Boom Boom Satellites
  3. Love Forever by 加藤ミリヤ×清水翔太
  4. 1970 by Boris
  5. Nabbed by Yoshida Brothers
  6. Kodou by Dir En Grey
  7. Funky Town by 安室奈美恵
  8. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni by 島みやえい子
  9. Molecicco by Boredoms
  10. Zombie by Versailles

As far as I can tell, this list of songs was pretty random when it comes to styles, etc., and to be completely honest, I wasn’t a fan of at least half of these, but that’s why you have the option of skipping tracks you don’t like, marking them as “hated” so they never show up again, or marking them as “loved” so you can keep track and listen later. Although the tag feature is a great way to find new music in a particular genre, to find stuff you like it’s probably best to play stations based off of artists you already like. That’s gotten me the most luck.

Another thing I like is the ability to see the top artists within a particular tag. For example, the Japanese tag.

I’m a bad music listener, so I don’t know who most of these people are, but I bet you do! Lastly, you can even see local gigs happening in your area by tag. Apparently Utada Hikaru will be coming to SF soon?

Anyways, I hope this helps some of you out there find some great new music to listen to. Of course, if you want to learn what people are singing about, you’ll probably want to learn Japanese.

Aww, more ways to find Japanese music. I find jpopAsia useful too – especially as the community can catagorise music in terms of relaxig, touching, sad, rocking, weird, etc. I usually find I'll like it if its 'touching'. Though I love the Fray and Maroon 5 and have yet to find anyone of similar styles in Japanese… ―(T_T)→ サクッ

  • sumi

I had been listening to Pandora but this is definitely easier to use and it has videos.
I won't be listening to Japanese pop music though.
    Thanks for the tip.

I used to use Last.fm quite a bit until they cut it off for everyone outside of the US and a few countries in Europe. It's nice, but I wasn't going to pay for what was essentially radio.

I am a fan of Pandora, but I don't think it has the 'tag' option that Last.fm does, which sounds really helpful for discovering new Japanese music. Especially when you have no idea where to start, like me!

  • http://bookcrossing.yoyo.pl/ Martyna

I was wondering. I haven't used it for a while and tried the past days to reconnect… but it never charges the “japanese”-tagged radio. Where can I read up on the issue? (I'm in France for now.)

oh no :( I hate it when services do that – aren't we supposed to be living in an international community? I pay for their service in the U.S., though, which is a bit weird, since I don't use any of their pay features… maybe it's time to unpay, haha.

    Yeah! Good old Wolfgang!
    Koto music is good too.

I use last.fm quite frequently and I sync it with my iPod, but I find that a lot of the music I listen to is not on there at all. Artists like Kanjani8 or Arashi may appear on their database, but I really have not heard much of their music on last.fm. However, it is generally awesome for all around Japanese music ;)

  • http://www.bradleyfarless.com/ Brad F.

That's weird. I wouldn't pay for it if I could get it for free. When
you move outside the US you see the Internet in a totally different
    way. A lot is restricted.

  • Nettie

Please tell me that one of the songs you personally like is Zombi from Versailles. I love that band so much!!

  • Serena

Utada is coming this weekend for a concert!

  • Mashimaro

Hmmm, maybe CooRie…Most of her songs are quite emotional.

  • http://bookcrossing.yoyo.pl/ Martyna

Thank you, Brad! That explains it. Need to move back to Germany. ;)

  • http://www.bradleyfarless.com/ Brad F.

I lived in Germany for four years as a kid. I still miss it. Lovely
place. We lived for about a year in a small town called Bell, close to
Frankfurt before moving onto Hahn AFB. That's closed down now though.
It's being used by German police as a training camp I think.

There is a site called Grooveshark (http://listen.grooveshark.com/) that also plays music for free like Last.fm and it's not restricted to USA… ;)

Thank you for the Grooveshark-link – too bas they are down at the moment for maintenance. I'll check them out later!

  • Sheepy

Thanks for the referral. Since I live outside of the USA or UK, last.fm's radio feature isnt free for me so this is a decent alternative. I like how they chart out their top songs.

  • Chelsea

heres a band for you. i just found this one myself…i'm not quite sure what youd call them ..sorta a mix of fall out boy and…..something a little more hardcore then them? but any way — Hyde — thats their name.

  • 名無し

If I know what song I want, I usually download from にこさうんど nicosound.anyap.info, which has streaming audio that others uploaded and allows you to free direct download. It's not really good with showing related songs, though, so don't expect to find any new music there. Sound quality also varies. How legal is that, anyway?

  • MZLweasel

Grooveshark is 100% free (with text ads on the side, VIP service for $3/month turns them off), has some Japanese music, and you can use their Radio service without paying. I like it a lot more than I like Last.fm – it has nice features like building an online library to stream to whatever device you'd like for free, and it has mobile apps for Blackberry and Android (iPhone and webOS coming soon).
