Tofugu’s 2010 New Years Resolutions

First resolution: Don’t write a cliché “New Years” post. Whoops. It’s been a nice and busy year, but there’s a lot planned for 2010. Thank you all so much for your support over the years (wow, multiple years!) – here’s what we have planned for 2010. Things are looking like they’ll be a little different!

1. Posting Everyday

Well, in January anyways. Tofugu will be taking the “30 days of blogging” challenge this month, so expect to see something every day. After that… well, we’ll see how it goes. Over the last month I’ve been moving schedules around to put more time into Tofugu, and I’m hoping that will show a lot in 2010.

2. Make TextFugu The Best Japanese Textbook Out There

I kind-of-sort-of announced the my Japanese textbook (TextFugu) the other day in a video. Over the next two months I’ll be working hard on finishing up most of the main content, and then spending the rest of the year making improvements to it (many improvements provided by members, who get paid for their help as they’re learning!), landing awesome 3rd party content, and more. TextFugu is a huge priority of mine in 2010 – get it now while it’s 50% off (including all the updates, add-ons, etc., it gets forever

).

3. Location, Location, Location

I think that the idea of “places” are really interesting. There’s been a lot of advancement in geo-location lately, and I think that can be used to talk about places and people in those places (namely in Japan) in a very unique way. Getting mircro about those locations can be interesting too, which brings us to number four.

4. Spend Some Time In Japan

Haven’t decided for sure yet, but I think 2010 is a good year to become a vagabond. More will be revealed on this later, but for now, just expect a good amount of “in-Japan” content in 2010, if everything works out (crossing my fingers).

5. Post More About Robots

Because everyone loves robots, and I feel like we’re at the cusp of the robotic revolution… and yes, it will be bloody (and darn cute, if Japan has anything to say about it).

6. Get to Know More Tofugu Readers

In 2009, I got to hang out with a few Tofugu readers (mostly thanks to moving to San Francisco, which is much larger than Salem, OR). I think it’s super cool to be able to meet new, like-minded people. In 2010, maybe I’ll get to meet you!

7. Have More Guest Posts

In 2009 we had a couple of really really great guest posts here (puts my stuff to shame). 2010 goal is to 6-drupal (what’s the correct term?) that number and get at least one guest post up a month. It’s awesome to see some other perspectives and writing styles.

8. Tofugu Interns?

Things are heating up in the Tofugu world. There may be some room for a Tofugu intern or two. Still noodling this one, but it’s looking like a definitely probability sometime this year. Lots of people looking for jobs, too, it seems like.

9. Scholarships

I’ve always wanted to run a scholarship on Tofugu – This year’s goal is to give away $1000 in scholarship money to help people study Japanese, which will trounce the 2009 total of $0. Take that 2009.

10. Tofugu T-shirts

Enough said, it’s been a long time coming, and needs to happen sooner rather than later.

So, are you the resolution type? I know I’m not, but I had to write something today for the whole “post-every-day-in-January” thing I just got myself into (already regretting it. How do other bloggers do it?). Anyone resolving to learn Japanese? New Years seems to be a good time for that kind of thing, right?

Wow, TextFugu looks awesome. I've been lurking for a few days reading through the blog, so I'm interested in it. Will the possible interns be local to your area? I mean if you're traveling around…that might be hard.

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

Most likely virtual, though local would always be a plus.

  • Mr_Ymmit

TextFugu is looking awesome, will definitely pre-purchase ;)

Also, I believe the correct term is sextuple.

    Yeah.

TextFugu looks great indeed, and I am going to pre-purchase it for sure, but I am one of those people that just wants to learn the Japanese language and culture… for almost no reason, just because I think its VERY interesting, and the language would be a nice addition to the 4 languages I already know, but idk if that's a good enough reason, and as far as I see, you dont really like the people who just learn Japanese for such stupid reasons ^^ ooor something like that, I might be completely wrong too.. Well to me it seems like quite an easy language to learn, I don't see why everyone says its so very difficult.. I'm sorry but i don't know where I'm going with this… Just wanted to say you are doing a great job, and it's going to help me with the learning quite a bit, and just wanted to start posting comments on your blogs, and start becoming part of the community so to say.

Very ambitious! I hope all your plans will work out exactly the way you intend them to! If I could be of any help, let me know. Cheers!

    Hey!
I've never posted here before but i just want to say that my new years resolution is to really do my best to learn Japanese this year and hopefully organise a trip to Japan for the Anime society i run at my uni. It's thanks to you Koichi! I've been trying on and off to learn Japanese but never found anything that really suited my stlye but i've fond it now thanks to Textfugu! So i just wanted to say Arigatou gozaimasu! (i'll be able to write that in Hiragana by myself soon :P) and Good luck to everyone with your resolutions!

  • WOTDsctoo

Wow…definitely looking forward to this year!! I don't really do resolutions myself though. >.<
Many posts in January will be a treat, and I'm really looking forward to some of these other resolutions!

    Woo, can't wait!

Resolution: use textfugu and learn Japanese! (or at least try to commit myself to learning Japanese for the zillion something something time. I am not that much of a quitter, life just gets in the way : and I'm forgetful… haha)
Anyway, I am very enthusiastic about textfugu :) It looks really really great!! I even tried it on my phone (which works like a charm) but reading during a car ride is a bad idea XD
To get my energy going to SOMEWHERE, I didn't use textfugu since I bought membership (no computer, no internet!), but I did do a lot of lessons on My Japanese Coach on the DS… which I should say is the most fun way to learn the language XD I mean learning words by hitting moles is pretty awesome!! There's a ton of games you do to learn, combined with actual lessons. It's also cool because it involves reading, writing, listening and speaking :)
    Downside is that I'm not understanding any of the grammar ^^; I mean I know there are 7 bases, but when to use which and all that… that's not actually covered ^^;
Also I really have to practice hiragana reading… because I can't complete the games anymore, as it's taking me too long! (after lesson 30 all mini games are in kana mostly.)
Another nice feature is the dictionary (both english and japanese searching) and other reference things :)

And I'm just talking a lot about my DS game without meaning too XD but it's a nice game, though it has some flaws.
Anyway I'm looking forward to using textfugu and hope to not forget about it (like ALL the other things… textbooks, websites etc etc I have used) and will finally really learn Japanese!!! (I mean, I do know some words and such… even those beyond neko etc. though I can mostly just rerecognize them!)

My new resolution: buy a tofugu t-shirt.

    Koichi,
You must complete YOUR resolution so I can complete MY resolution.

Hey Koichi, I'm really looking forward to your to-come 'in-Japan' blogs…I'm thinking about studying at Waseda this fall (if everything turns out my way ;) I'll be checking back for updates and more information I can use when I'm in Japan-Land. Good luck this year!

I want to wear a Tofugu tee now too!

I honestly didnt expect you to write one every day though. It probably takes a while to make these.
