Godzilla has a Blog (and more!)

godzilla-blog

I’ve been working on a couple of new blog projects the last month or two. As some of you might know, I have a pretty poor success-to-failure ratio when it comes to starting new projects (who doesn’t!? what?), so I went ahead and made sure to write some first, announce later. We’ll see, I’m feeling good about these ones. What about you?

RealGodzilla.com

realgodzilla-125x125It’s been a while since we’ve heard from our friend Godzilla, and that’s because he’s been busy putting together his own blog! Life is a lot different for him ever since moving to America (big transition!), and he’s sharing his experiences, opinions, and ideas with the rest of the world. He doesn’t have another movie coming out until 2014 and has a lot of swing time, so he wants to make sure you (and his family) know what’s going on between now and then. Although he’s been writing a little bit already, why not help him out by asking him some questions? I know everyone’s always wished they could pick Godzilla’s brain a bit. What’s your favorite color? What’s the meaning of life? Where did Gamera “touch you” (now use the King Kong doll to show us where!). Also, if you’re really into it, don’t forget to follow Godzilla on Twitter!

*This will also be my private blog (kind of…very very kind of…) replacing BoxedTofu, at least for now. So, expect RealGodzilla to have some aspects of my real life. Just make sure you take things with a grain of salt.

Actually, got a Cease and Desist from Toho, so no more realgodzilla.com … you’d think they’d know a good thing (for them and their Godzilla brand) when they see it. Ah well, they’re old and grumpy, I guess.

eduPirate.com

edupirate_125x125Lately I’ve really gotten into education. Teaching and working at eduFire has founded in me a new passion for… pirates… hrm, pirating education. You know how all of you pirate movies and music (of course you don’t)… It’s kind of like that… I’m looking for new and better ways to teach and learn, whether that’s Japanese, algebra, or underwater basket weaving. I really want to explore and follow (and lead!) the new educational movements happening all over the world right now. There are so many teachers and students out there who aren’t teaching and learning to their full potentials, and I want to do my best to change that a bit! I know that most of you here probably aren’t interested in the education field, but if you are, take a look at eduPirate and follow it on Twitter.

Secret Japan-Related Podcast

podcast-questionHow many of you listen to podcasts? I know I don’t. I have no idea why I’m starting one up, but it should be a lot of fun. It’s not a “Tofugu Podcast.” Instead, it’s a project I’m doing with a few other talented people. One of them is Deas from RockingInHakata (who did a guest post on Tofugu!) and the other is Michael Downey (The Gakuranman!) from MichaelDowney.net. There’s also an amazing support staff / part-time host as well, TBA. It’ll mostly be a casual talk-show-esque podcast, which will include guests coming onto the show as well as answering listener questions about Japan. We’ll be recording our first episode this coming Saturday, so if you have any questions or things you want to hear us talk about, please feel free to send me an e-mail (we’ll get something more official soon!).

Some Social-Marketing Classes

Mostly all work related, but I thought there might be some people interested in some of these classes. Definitely think there’s some stuff here that could make a positive difference in some of your lives! I know I wish I had these kinds of resources when I was younger (not that much younger, though), which is partly why I’m offering them to you! You will have to register an eduFire account to see these in your own local times.

If you’re considering starting a professional blog, or want to have an advantage in getting a job (especially in this economy!) I definitely recommend you check out the Blogging class (not to mention the Guerrilla Marketing classes as well).

Japanese Pen Pals?

This is something I’ve been thinking about lately. Since I have a blog a lot like this one (but opposite, and for Japanese to learn about American culture and the English language), I thought it would be pretty neat to have some sort of pen pal program between the two websites. First of all, I have no idea where to start, since I wouldn’t want to make it a manual process (the more automated the better, probably, but not toooo automated), but I do want to put my creepy feelers out there to see what you folks think about the idea, and if you would be interested / if you see any pitfalls I should be thinking about.

That would be cool if you did the pen pal thing! I always wanted to have one, but failed... She stopped writing to me, but she only wrote because of an assignment from school anyways. :(

I don't know how you could do it, but I'm sure you can figure it out... :)
  • Sofi
I would love to see a penpal type thing... I've recently been looking for one, but I can't find any really good ones.

If it's going to be language-learning oriented, one thing I would suggest is that you post prompts or topics or something - I've tried to penpal with other English speakers even, and the one thing that always kills it is the lack of things to talk about. (I always ended up thinking "Do they even care about this?" "Is this too personal?") Of course, I'm sure you'd think up some fun, quirky ones. :) Or user-suggested. When both people have things to talk about it forces them to use more of their vocabulary and get creative - away from "This is a pen/kore wa pen desu" xD

    Just my .2¢
  • WOTDsctoo
    Lol @ Godzilla. XDD

I am also very interested in the pen pal idea!
  • Ally
i think the penpal thing would be a big hit if you can do it right!! you're talking strictly email though right?
  • Jane
I would totally participate in a penpal thing. I've been trying to teach myself (with little success, I admit) but I don't really have anyone to practice with.
  • Digger
Hello Jane! As a fellow self-taught-learner, I feel your pain. But I've been hurting a lot less since I took Koichi's advice and started an account on www.lang-8.com. It's kind of like a MySpace for international people and it's perfect for writing practice.

I'm still trying to find a way to practice my speaking, though......
  • Wow, you're working hard Koichi!

I won't be much into the godzilla thing, but I will definitely keep an eye on that eduPirate project.

BTW Godzilla - my website finally moved to our own server a few days ago - and we have our own little godzilla there too :D (our designer did a great job).

And one more thing, I'm searching for a site focused on Japanese to do a guest post (including a one-page material and a video in either English or Polish) - do you have any free spaces in your schedule or know anyone who needs a quest post? Thank you in advance.

    I'm keeping my fingers crossed,
    Mizuu
  • Oooooh I am curious at that podcast !!
I would be interested in a penpal system thingy
I have some Japanese penpal friends ^^ and it's lots of fun !!
  • I love your ideas of pen pals Koichi, I've had some really good experiences in the past, but now I can't find good websites, so it seems a very good project! and the podcaste seems really cool too.
  • Woo! Secret podcastings in the works!

Who knows what this trio of Wonky Japan-loving good-for-nothings will conjure up?! I know I'll be there listening in (if only to hear Koichi's attempt at an English accent again :P). The question is, will I be wearing the Gakuran as I spout random thoughts about the Japanese web??
  • Even if you're not actually wearing one, nobody will know...it's like RADIO! Ha ha. We can just edit it into the show notes. "Yes, Mike was wearing a gakuran for the purists." It could even be a lie - nobody would know...not that we'd lie to our audience...about much... Ha ha. (爆笑);-)
  • DavidCK
    Pen pal would be cool.
  • mmnessa
Wowowow...! it's like you've been saving up all of this awesomeness for quite some time now!!
I always wanted to know about Godzilla's daily musings...destroying cities I suppose? I always saw him as a cat lover and now I get the chance to confirm that :D
And a podcast!!! Why am I the only one who is thrilled about this?? I can't believe I'm getting a mix of two of the things I love the most.
  • well....u can change a bit the pen-pal's meaning and turn it a bit more modern (since we are not going to use actual old-fashioned- mail).

i think you could make a little skype comunity and mix east and west, learn the culture, practice languages and meeting new people along the way...

    well...thats just my opinion XD
  • Chimiko
Pen pal idea is great. And I'd love to listen to the talk show thing you've planned. Sounds like great fun~.

    Pen PALS! Pen PALS!

I need more people to laugh at my atrocious grammatical abilities in Japanese.
  • Having as many blogs as you do would be too overwhelming for me. I don't know how you do it, but its masterly.

2Cents: In for pen pals >_<
  • I just noticed one of the links off to the right. What is this Incredible Tofugu Book? Sounds delectable

  • very tasty indeed - currently trying to figure out a few technology related hurdles, but it should be really neat!

oh man, and I do a terrrible job keeping up with all my blogs. I need to figure out how to get some orphans to work for me, or something.

They are called “Designer Biofuels” because the microbes can be tailored the required use. For example, they can be designed to make “bio-crude,” which can be refined into gas, or used to make petroleum-based products like plastics, fertilizers, etc.The question of the day: How will this effect greenhouse-gas emissions? Well, thrift savings plan considering that this is petroleum, the pure combustion of it is essentially the same. However, if you look at the big picture, the life cycle, it does potentially represent a reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions, compared to both gas and ethanol.
