Free Japanese Lesson: How to Count in Japanese

Now don’t get me wrong. This isn’t going to be as simple as one, two, three (or should I say ichi, ni, san?). I’ll be doing another live Japanese lesson for anyone to attend, all about counting in Japanese. If you’ve been studying Japanese for a little while, you might know that there’s a ridiculous amount of ways to count (i.e. those horrible things known as counters). If you don’t know about these “counter” things, or if you need to solidify one of the many counters I’ll be going over, then this might be a class for you. Oh, and did I mention? It’s free! More info after the jump:

There will be two classes. One for those in the American time zone, and one for those in the European one. I will be covering up to twelve different counters, ranging from how to count small animals, to counting age, to counting those things that don’t have special counters. I’ll also be providing you an informational booklet (read: e-book), to take home with you and refer to whenever you need some Japanese counting help, at the end of the lesson. The e-book will be available to everyone else later this week.

How to Count in Japanese (American Time Zone) Class has been completed

How to Count in Japanese (European Time Zone) Class has been completed

You can come to whichever one you want, though, so don’t let the time zone thing throw you off. Just pick the one that works best for you! You will need to register for an eduFire account to attend. The last time we did this it was tons of fun, so I hope to see you!

Also, I’m not the only one doing free classes. You can take more free classes on the eduFire classes page, which can be accessed here.

Interested in what makes eduFire classes different from normal classes? Check out the latest eduFire blog posting. Also, if you’re interested in online education (which I am very interested in, thus, Tofugu), you should go to this discussion tonight! I’ll see you there!

Update: Classes were completed, so go check out the e-book instead!

    Oh well.

  • That's ナベアツ (nabeatsu), a famous comedian who just...counts. A lot more entertaining than it sounds, I think.

When He counts isn't it on certain numbers he makes a funny face such as the one in the picture. Now that I think about it I feel like a may have come across a Youtube video of him.
  • Yep, that's the one :)
Very simple humor, but I like it a lot!

  • kataomi
Too bad I didn't see that in time !!! :( and i cannot be there for the europeen hours I have class at this time !!!!
  • im glad that you are tackling that scary subject of counters. why is it that there are so many? is there a reason or did they just decide to make counting as difficult as possible? lol. (im not quite sure who "they" are, but "they" are up to something! ^_^

i have seen that ナベアツ guy a number of times on tv. the first time was when he climbed tokyo tower counting his steps and making a facial expression and contorting much in the way gary oldman does when he takes his drugs. in leon: the professional every time he counts says a multiple of three.
why do japanese people find that funny? is it because they are retarded? because i've thought about it over and over and it's the only solution i've come up with.
