Win some Tasty Japanese Candy: Follow us on Twitter!

Posted on 05. Aug, 2008 by koichi in Contests, News, Tofugu News

I’ve been using Twitter more and more, and I thought I’d invite all of you to follow us! I wrote about Twitter before, and how it can be used to improve your Japanese, but it also has many more “normal” uses as well. Kind of like what we’re doing over on Twitter.

Over on the Tofugu Twitter page, I do updates about Japanese news, notify people about articles that come out here, give little tips on learning Japanese, share small experiences that would help you live in Japan, and much much more. I even will reply to people who Tweet at me (that’s what they call posting…tweeting)!

Visit Tofugu’s Twitter Page

So, for this week only (Until August 12), anyone who subscribes to my Twitter will automatically be entered into a drawing where they can win Gumi candy (グミ). Five people chosen at random will get one bag of this friggin’ amazing candy each, and you’ll even be able to choose what flavor you want sent to you. Need more information about how amazing the candy is? Hit the jump and watch the video:

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

Also, if you watched the video, you’ll know about my other Youtube channel, which is being tromped on by Tofugu. If you’re interested, and want to listen to my poor Japanese, go and check out Koichiben on Youtube! Heh, and also in the video I mentioned you can subscribe to Koichiben on Twitter as well. And yes, it counts as two submissions (twice the chance of winning some ridiculously tasty candy!)

P.S. Oh, and one way to help manage Twitter and make it easier to follow conversations is by using Twitter programs. I use Twhirl, but you can use whatever you want.

I saw that mango bag open. =O

I think I saw some Gumi at a sandwich place near my sister's boyfriend's work. I didn't buy them, unfortunately, but if I could have, I would have. Also, I'm trying to cut back on my sweets, so I probably might not join in.

Also, Koichiben is, of course, a Japanese blog/vlog about America, so surely the audience is, of course, the Japanese people in Japan. Here's an idea...ask for your Koichiben peeps to spread the love of "I wanna know about America" if you can!

    Coolio! Contests rock.

I'll go and make an account now!
  • High school politics? Using candy to lure peeps is the MO for perverts and child molesters.
  • Ouch Viet, Ouch. Not like I'm offering puppies in windowless vans.

The ironic thing is, offering candy to strangers on the Internet is a lot less sketchy than in person. Finally, ONE thing that's less sketchy online.
  • So... Will you be giving out the individual little baggies or the actual bag of little baggies? Haha yeah... No need to answer.

You know whats better than Gumi? Meiji Strawberry bar :D
  • pshh, meiji strawberry bar is a different type of candy. That's in the chocolate category. No comparing allowed.

As for Gumi - definitely one big bag per person...though it would also be kind of cool to split up different flavors so everyone can try everything...hmmm.

    i got a question >.<
how do u subscribe in a twitter thing?
    u put follow or somthing????
  • Yeah, sorry, you hit the follow button
  • Maciel
    alright thanks
and if like someone wins how do u know where to send the candy???? o.O
  • I'll ask you for your address - if you don't give it to me, I'll just have to choose someone else :(
  • bunnyb
    Following you! :)
  • Ok ! Following you too !
  • Hey. I have your Pocari Sweat. Do you want me to mail it to you?
  • I know you do! (sadd). You can just bring it with you if you want. I still have some.

Wait a sec, if you sent this 8 hours ago, you were up till 4am your time?
  • I was definitely not up until 4am, haha. I was up until about 12:30am. Your math must be wonky. Anyway, I'm sad that I can't win this contest. I guess I'll just have to steal your gumi when I come to see you.
  • lawnmowerlatte
Sounds good. I've never had Gumi before. If I'd known you were on Twitter I would have followed you earlier. Then again, I wouldn't be eligible for candy now.
  • nahh, even previous subscribers are entered, well, besides people who write on Tofugu, anyways.

    LYCHEE FTWWWW!!

:D. I can get these at my own free will & $3, but free stuff is free, & yummy :]. Subscribed.
  • Ahhhh! I'm not the only one that loves the lychee flavor!
  • Everyone loves lychee flavor.
  • Mai
Well the only flavor's I've ever had are apple & lychee. Apple used to be my favorite until my friend force fed me lychee.

It sucks how lychee is only a circle though :(. Apples are heart-shaped.
  • Maybe in Hawaii.
  • Bruce A
You are not alone. Lychee is sublime. I think I'm going to look for some at Marukai tomorrow. Yum!
  • emiko
I love candy! Yay! Don't feel bad about the Koichiben, I'll start watching it more often, it is harder for a lot of my friends to watch since they don't speak Japanese, but I'll try to get them to watch too!

    Good Luck
  • emiko
btw my fav gumi is kiwi!
  • I love how each Kiwi gumi has a single kiwi seed in it. They even advertise this "feature" on the front of the package - i love it! haha.
  • emiko
I know! It is just so awesome! My sister and I are always arguing over the last piece! One time she hid a piece outside of the bag, so after I finished eating the last piece, she pulled the hidden piece out from behind her back and ate it in front of me!

I was really sad after that! T.T
  • That's sneaky D:
  • emiko
I know! I trained her too well. *Sigh*

The Muscat gumi are notable for having the description "Its translucent color so alluring and taste and aroma so gentle and mellow offer admiring feelings of a graceful lady. "

I remember the Apple one being pretty great too
  • sokout
I had promised myself I wasn't entering once another social network website but that candy seems so delicious...
  • OK, what if I already subscribe to your Twitter account? Do I block you and then resubscribe? :)
  • Oh, I saw the video...apparently subscribing to koichiben (which I just did) accomplishes the same result. Hoping I can try some of that awesome candy soon.
  • and current / previous followers are automatically entered. Win on both fronts!
  • JackTamaki
I've had a bunch of those gummies before. I can attest to their unbeatable flavor.
  • mistawang
GUMI ARE AMAZING, lolol. I usually get them from time to time at Lee's Sandwich Shop in monterey park, but they only carry strawberry and orange, so those are the only ones I've tried. I love the strawberry ones because they taste like real strawberries with a hint of honey xD. It would be nice to get a taste of that lychee flavor, though >=).
  • fangirl801
This sounds sooo cool!! I can't get yummy candy because I live NOWHERE near...anyplace. So there are NO Asians here. At all. I kid not. So I only had ramune once because I had money to order it online. And I get pocky because Wal-Mart carries it now (how cool is that?!). Otherwise....there is nothing more Asian around here than the "Chinese" take-out. :'( I'm loving the koichiben twitter though...I can't believe I missed this!! I can practice Japanese with twitter-coolness!!!!
    *fangirl squeee*
  • murasaki
Oh! I've had those before! They are available at the local Asian food market here, and we go there every week. My favorite flavor is the mango. :)
  • This is an interesting proposition. Unique and way cool.
