Takeru Kobayashi Loses Hot Dog Eating Contest again. Shouldn’t go swimming for at least 30 minutes

Maybe it’s time he commits seppuku, though, I don’t know if I’d want to see a stomach full of hot dogs get disemboweled.

It’s been a year since the last “Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest” at Coney Island, when reigning king (at the time) of eating food “really really fast” lost his title, and his world record, to San Jose’s Joey Chestnut. This makes me sad. I thought for sure he would come back with a victory, regaining his honor.

Still, Kobayashi did actually manage to tie Joey Chestnut with 59 hot dogs in 10 minutes (it was 12 minutes in years previous), but lost it in overtime, where they had to eat 5 hot dogs faster than each other. It seems that now, though, both of them hold the record for most hot dogs eaten in 10 minutes, so that’s something I suppose.

I remember seeing a little blurb about Kobayashi on TV when I was in Japan. They wanted to find out how such a skinny guy was able to eat so many hot dogs. They followed him to a ramen shop where he at a ridiculous amount of ramen. They then did a cat scan, or something, where they found out his stomach was much larger than a normal human’s. If I remember correctly (and let me know if I’m wrong), it’s 3 times as large as a normal stomach. Not sure where there’s room for that, but apparently it’s there.

He also uses a special technique when eating hot dogs – they call it the “Solomon Method.” Basically, he breaks the hot dogs in half and stuffs both sides into his mouth and swallows it that way. Whatever works, I suppose. Not surprisingly, though, hot dogs aren’t his favorite food. His five favorite things to eat are cold tofu, Yogurt, Plain Bagels with Cream Cheese and Lox, Royal Milk Tea, and Vietnamese Spring Rolls.

Here is a list of his matches. It’s really interesting to see his improvement. You would expect a professional eater to just be able to eat until his stomach is all full, but apparently there is a lot of training that goes into it.

-2001: Ate 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes (shattering the previous record of a mere 25). He gained 8 pounds during this contest.
-2002: Ate 50 and one half hot dogs.
-2003: Ate 44 and one half hot dogs.
-2004: Ate 53 and one half hot dogs, getting a new record
-2005: Ate 49 hot dogs
-2006: Ate 53 and three quarters hot dogs, getting another world record. He also became world champion at eating bratwurst (I imagine this contest was a bit tastier) by eating 58 sausages in 10 minutes.
-2007: World record was broken by Joey Chestnut, who ate 59 and one half hot dogs in 12 minutes. Later that year they went head to head, and even though Kobayashi ate a ridiculous 63 hot dogs, Chestnut bested him by eating 66.
-2008: Kobayashi loses a tie-breaker to Chestnut in a “who can eat 5 hot dogs the fastest contest.” Both of them ate 59 hot dogs in 10 minutes (that’s really fast).

It’s obvious he’s not “losing it,” he has improved in the last few years. It’s just that there’s finally someone better than him eating lots of hot dogs. So, the question is, can Kobayashi keep improving and eventually beat Chestnut? I suppose it all depends on where their limits are, and I’m not sure if they’ve reached them yet.

Poor Kobayashi, I hope he manages to beat the other guy someday! Still, 59 hot dogs… that’s just a bit too many to stomach.

What goes in must come out. These guys must have mad #2.

  • J

i really want a hot dog now, with minimal ketchup and no mustard, please. it’s been well over a year since i’ve last had one! you can’t find a good place in Hawaii.

by the way, so he lives in Japan, or..?

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

    yeah, japanese guy.

  • Djarno

I know that this is a Japanese culture blog but I’m with Chestnut all the way. If we Americans are going to suffer the ill effects that come with our love affair with processed, fatty foods (obesity, heart disease, etc.) then at least one of us should be able to hang on to the Hot Dog Eating title. I don’t mind so much if Japan or other countries beat us in lesser competitions like the Olympics for example.

  • Djarno

By the way, if you want a good hot dog, you have to find a place that hasn’t changed it’s hot dog water since the 20′s. If, after finishing your hot dog, you don’t feel like going to confession, then you should keep looking.

    Quoting Koichi:
” Maybe it’s time he commits seppuku, though, I don’t know if I’d want to see a stomach full of hot dogs get disemboweled.”

    I know I would.

Wow, that is a hell of a lot of hot dogs @_@ and not being a hot dog lover in the first place, it nearly makes me gag thinking about it.
I really hope this Kobayashi guy wins back his title though, whenever I think of insanely fast hot dog eating he’s the dude that comes to mind! Not some Joey Chestnut (Reminds me of Johnny Appleseed) guy D:

    Okay,

A quick calculation shows that 59 hot dogs multiplied by the average length of six inches (15 cm) equals 29 feet and six inches (8.85 meters) of hot dogs. That is equivalent of standing end upon end, THREE stories high, of hot dogs.

    That’s disgusting…

  • http://rimkaizumo.deviantart.com/ Rimka

That.. Is just amazing o_o That brings it into a perspective I never really had before. xD All I have to say to that is

My God. That is a lot of hot dogs.

  • fredydb327

I bet Sonic would beat him. :D

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

I dunno, Sonic is pretty tiny. Maybe the first couple hot dogs, but after that he’d explode like a goldfish

  • fredydb327

He could just pretend and put them somewhere so fast people wouldn’t notice. :D He’s just gotta go Supersonic. But then again, Kobayashi just has to take his rings and Sonic would fail.

  • http://youtube.com/pigstaanime kakapoopy

haha did u see his stomach!!? thats just wrong. it looks like he stuck like 3 binders in his stomach haha

  • http://youtube.com/pigstaanime kakapoopy

he must poop out torpedoes .

  • http://youtube.com/pigstaanime kakapoopy

no hotdogs in hawaii?? wow im lucky to live in the georgia…

the hard part is ignoring all the racism

  • WOTDsctoo

Exactly. He could make them dissapear before people’s eyes…but that doesn’t mean they were eaten.
    >.>
    <.<

Maybe he could win the “who can eat 5 hot dogs the fastest contest?” Whaddya think?

  • WOTDsctoo

Ahhh, I remember my dad telling me about Kobayashi years ago before I even started studying Japanese. He likes wierd things like that. I was soo psyched when I learned how to write his name in kanji. Hooray for simple kanji names!

But I’m sad he didn’t win. Such dazzling hair! Although I probably shouldn’t base my support on that… XD

Anyway, that stomach picture is rather frightening, eh?

  • http://kantanda.wordpress.com/ Mizuu

I alwayd liked Tsunami, because in each and every show I watch starring him, he seems so… kind :). My fav so far was an MTV produced 2-hour show which was something like a video diary before one of the contests. It included what physical exercises he does, how he doesn’t eat before the contest or how he eat increasingly more before his “diet”.
With a giggle I’m recalling the part where he went into a restaurant (small, yes), and ate EVERYTHING that poor guy had in storage. XD

  • ghindo

The ANGUISH on Kobayashi’s face in the first picture is priceless.

  • http://oorumon.blogspot.com Rin

This brings up many questions for me… does Kobayashi exercise a lot? How long does it take him to lose the weight gained in one of these contests? How many cows/pigs/hot-dog-meat-animals died for that amount of hot-dogs? XD
Even though he lost this year, at least Kobayashi has much cooler hair.

  • http://tomschaller.wordpress.com Tom

God, there’s something just so obscene about the whole competitive eating thing. Not just physically either. It’s fairly tactless in a world of huge food shortages.

  • Kitam

    man.. i tried -_-

but why does the lady in the first picture behind him look like shes in more pain than he is?
and i cant even begin to imagine what word the announcer is trying to say that requires a person to bite off his own tongue.

Also, correct me if im wrong.. but isnt that what it would look like when you go super sayian in reverse? if i was him.. id booboo in a bucket.. theres no way his system could process that properly, he has to poop out links. no doubt, either that or ballpark franks.

  • http://www.nicolecleary.com Nikki

what I would really like to know, is how he discovered this ‘talent’ (if you want to call it that…). Went to a tabehoudai one evening and decided to turn his skill to hotdogs instead?

  • http://www.tofugu.com Viet

Before Kobayshi joined the scene there was another Japanese man that dominated the Coney Island contest for a few years. The guy was also a skinny man. I think Kobayashi got his inspiration from his former.

  • Jamaipanese

thats a tonne load of hotdogs they ate -_-

  • emiko

i wish i could eat like that sometimes . . . even though it is a little bit gross . . . but how does he stay so thin and eat so much? . . . it must be a gift

  • St

Chestnut ate 66 hotdogs in 12 minutes in 2007? What would the record be if this “sport” became as popular as, say, baseball or soccer?

  • Caitie

From a vegetarian’s view point that’s just disgusting………………no……from any normal person’s view point that many hot dogs is frightening.

    Ick.

On the other hand I bet Kobayashi still holds the hot dog eating record in Japan…so that’s a plus…right? =]

  • http://www.atomik-bomb.deviantart.com Girugamesh

WOW, thats a lot of hotdogs!

  • Djarno

I have to give you props, Koichi. If one picture alone could sum up the entire world of competitive eating, it would be the one you chose for the beginning of this article.

  • Kobayashi Fan

I was really hoping he’s win, although I still maintain that he eats more of the hotdog than Chestnut does. Chestnut wears most of his hotdogs on his face, which really shouldn’t count…

    Go Kobayashi!

  • keirakibou

he looks pregnant in that second picture…

  • james

Sorry for the offtopic post koichi, but how many kanji do you know?

  • james

Edit: Actually, I am asking everyone. How many kanji do you guys know?

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

I’m not the type that keeps track, so I’ve really got no idea…

    Sent from my iphone

  • Digger

Ah! Did you notice Kobayashi off to the side with his stomach all distended?! Ouch! I mean, I half expect for a monster to break out of there like in Alien or something……….

  • TomiWar

    lmao thats f-ing kool

  • james

    convenient, eh?

  • Grammar Police

“They followed him to a ramen shop where he at a ridiculous amount of ramen. ” Got proof reading? just kidding:P

  • http://www.tofugu.com Viet

Well… Just recently Kobayashi beat out Chestnut in the annual Satay eating contest in Singapore.

    http://news.smh.com.au/world/japanese-eating-ch

  • emiko

my friend said that she watched a documentary on him and he DRANK a lot of oil (cooking) in a challenge!! that’s amazing!

  • http://www.gaiaonline.com/profiles/2668786/ Pachi_PMT

So according to the article, we’ll get to see his eating skills with hamburgers soon. Cool!

  • http://www.gaiaonline.com/profiles/2668786/ Pachi_PMT

It seemed as though Kobayashi had a (somewhat) easier time with the hotdogs than Chestnut, who looked like he kept trying not to gag. Though maybe that was because he was trying to stuff himself faster than Kobayashi (Biting off more than he could swallow, perhaps?).

Anyway, thanks for putting up vid links!

  • http://www.myspace.com/ravishing_peach little_bee

I think I remember watching him compete on TV a few years ago. Wasn’t he notorious for some sort of wiggle he did to force the food down a little faster?

It’s amazing how much food these guys can eat. I’ve heard that even after just one oversized meal, your stomach can start to stretch. I wonder. Can stomach tissue develop stretch-marks?

It's on Flickr under a creative commons license that allows use with attribution, which I did do (see link at bottom that says “image source”), so I don't think I'm doing anything wrong… I definitely _would_ appreciate being able to keep them up though. I could add links on the images themselves if that would help?
