Mini Post: Odd Personal Grooming Choices

Japan is the home of quite a few Guinness World Records (the world’s longest concert being the most recent one I can remember), but now it’s got another under it’s belt: world’s longest eyebrow. Toshie Kawakami, the 57 year old president of a Tokyo food company, has an eyebrow hair which measured 17.2cm as of June 9th. She says that she normally keeps the hair tucked behind her ear, but let’s it down for special occasions*. She discovered the hair when it was a mere 7cm long (the world record at that time was 11.5cm) and decided to grow it out. Aside from an accident involving an overzealous hairdresser (who set her back 3cm), her path to the top was pretty clear, as the hair grew nearly a centimeter each month until she got Guinness authorization in January. Apparently, she’s trying for 20cm, next.

* I’m joking, of course

  • All I have to say is... What?! This has to be one of the weirdest things I've read lately @_@ and that's saying a lot! I wasn't even aware that you could grow out your eyebrows like this.

    *shivers* I'm officially creeped out.
  • I've always been creeped out by body-related records. Like the man with the longest fingernails, that kind of grow in a circle. Ew.
  • I agree with you in full @_@ Those things always grossed me out. and didn't one lady like keep her long finger nails in some sort of bag or something to protect them? I don't quite remember.. Still creepy either way.

  • How DO you grow eyebrow hair out like that? Pretty sure mine doesn't grow longer than what it's at now. I bet she just has a normal hair in her eyebrow area, otherwise it would fall out, I think.
  • Here's the old record-holder:

Sorry if it shows up weird... Disqus' is freaking out over html.
  • haha, you don't have to use html...just type the link in and it will link automatically.

It's a piece of string glued to her eyebrow!
    XD
  • WOTDsctoo
    So wierd. XD

I wouldn't think that a company president would be the type of person to follow through on something like this. Good for her!
  • Sougen02
I once knew a guy whos eyebrow hairs could almost be pulled down to his cheek bone. And I thought that was odd =_=.
Haha he's a noob compared to this woman.

Does this hair put her at a disadvantage, being that she's president of a Tokyo food company?
Does it get tangled in her hair (on her head)?
    Does she shampoo it?

All question I I would love to ask her if I were to meet her xD

    Here is what I think:

"Does this hair put her at a disadvantage, being that she's president of a Tokyo food company?"
--Apparently not, if anything it'll make her company more popular (I mean, she is after all in the Guinness book of records...)

"Does it get tangled in her hair (on her head)?"
From Erin's post: "She says that she normally keeps the hair tucked behind her ear, but let’s it down for special occasions"
--It seems to be alright, tucked neatly behind her ear

    "Does she shampoo it?"
--What if she accidentally rips it off? Shampooing involves some pulling (sometimes)
  • Oh man that would be so depressing o_o You're like .2 CM away from getting the record and someone goes " Oh hey, you have something on your face " thinking it's a stray hair and pulls it off.
  • Hahaha. That would be heartbreaking.

Ah what the human body can do... Bono is number 2, he just needs to remember that.

Oh and Disqus is pretty damn awesome... it won't log me in anymore >.> Or its firefox...

It sort of gets pampered apparently, because it's the only eyebrow hair that's died the same colour as her other hair.
  • mmnessa
why does this creep me out?
  • Because it's a freakishly long eyebrow >_> I think that's reason enough.
  • Just think of it as a hair from her head that moved a few inches downwards.....at least that's what I did; now my entire perspective of the world has changed.
  • Chimiko
    Really, really weird.. O_O
  • emiko
That is strange. How did she let it grow so long without it getting pulled out? I wonder if people even notice her long eyebrow strand. It's so strange O.O
  • Are you a fan of freakish hair growth but can't get to Japan anytime soon or are too xenophobic to go. We have our own future Guinness Laureate here in the good ol' USA. Check this out:

The next time you're in Florida forking over your retirement fund to Mickey Mouse or speedboating over manatees, you can visit this guy.

Even though it's shorter, I think it's creepier. You'd notice it everytime he blinks.
  • Sad manatees ;_;
  • I live in Florida, but fortunately not that close to UF (though I may be going there sometime soon) I hope never to meet this guy x_x
  • JackTamaki
Wow, I'm surprised that it hasn't fallen off yet. If she could, she should grow all of her eyebrow hairs out and then braid them, or maybe get them put into corn rows (is that what they're called?).
  • You gotta go with the Pai Mei look.

    Haha, how strange xD

It's that applemilk-whatever girl!! that really threw me off...
  • So its just ONE eye brow hair that grows that long? I call that PHUCKING skills!!! lmao
  • Stalwartlover
ill have to ask her what conditioner she uses
  • mountaincritter
Just curious......how many people were at the largest concert in the Guiness Book?
  • That was a typo on my part, sorry! It was actually the longest concert (184 hours). I really don't know how many people were at the largest concert.
  • I've actually had a hair on my forearms or legs [specific 1 hair] that sometimes grows longer than normal. It's nothing close to that lady's eyebrow hair, but I would say it wasn't of normal length. What's weird is that its always just one piece of hair. As soon as I notice it, I never really wait for it to grow any longer because I have that temptation of just pulling it out, haha. You could kind of relate it to picking scabs like a kid would. I don't know who else did that kind of thing, but that's the kind of kid I was. (-_-)~
  • Lenners
    That is totally.. weird +_+"
  • yoshiku
    paimei's eyebrow is bigga!
  • Eevee
Some people's genetics are... to put it nicely, weird.
For example, certain people's hair on their legs stops at a certain point (like, halfway down their calves). My dad has this, rather creepy.

But yeah, wouldn't it suck if she accidentally pulled it out or something? I often pull hair out as I tuck it behind my ear or move it around, especially as it gets longer.
  • well, I don't have any strange hair growth, but I can invert my knuckles and pop coins off them, and bend my fingers backward XD... I wonder if anyone has ever been tempted to just go up to her and pluck it out? And why in the world is it only that one hair? O_o
  • Kitam
    yuck?
  • ewww hahahah. i wish she could grow more of it so she could braid it hahaha
  • Ana_chan
Now, that was random. And kinda yucky, too. But thanks for the article! Shows that Weird is Universal, I guess. Yay!
  • Surely someone's been able to confirm that Larry King is a cyborg by now. (He's actually not drinking coffee on the show; he's ingesting a combination of motor oil and ethanol that powers his backup fuel cells. You know, in case his main power source- the light display behind him- ever fails.)
  • Actually byoo, she only wears the pads, so no I am not changing an 84 year old's diaper. But the irony is, I lost my sense of smell a few years ago, so the woman can smell like pee all day long and I wouldn't know the difference.
  • Haha wow, that is pretty funny. If she ever decides to get rid of it, she definitely needs to get her eyebrows threaded. Searching for eyebrow threading videos on info will give her much information on how to thread them. Good luck!
