Mixi.jp now hates foreigners. Requires a (Japanese) mobile email address to join.

Wow Mixi, way to put a damper on things. About two months ago, I put up a tutorial on how to get started with Mixi so that you could use it to practice your Japanese. Now it seems like Mixi is pretty much off limits (for now) to foreigners without a Japanese cell phone email addresses. This theoretically means you have to be living in Japan, and own a cell phone if you want to be able to join Mixi now.

Here are the new rules:

  1. You have to confirm a Japanese cell phone email address (docomo, AU, softbank, etc).
  2. You also have to confirm a normal email address (hotmail, gmail, whatever).

If you don’t have both of these, you don’t get into Mixi, simple as that. I’ll still be happy to send folks invites, just know that you won’t be able to complete the registration process unless you have a Japanese cell phone.

Anyways, now the important thing is to try and figure out a way around this. Anyone know of a way to get a Japanese cell phone email without actually owning a cell phone? Anyone know a way to circumvent this? I invited myself to Mixi, but I couldn’t figure anything out. I looked around online as well. Still nothing. If any of you know, please let me know in the comments and I’ll make a post about it so we can get this Mixi train rolling again.

UPDATE: Just because some of you seemed worried, if you are already registered with Mixi, you’re okay (for now). I can’t see them shutting down already created accounts just because you don’t have a Japanese mobile email…though, perhaps I wouldn’t put it past them as well. Mixi has done some other crazy stuff that makes me think they are internazis (Thanks for the link, Caitlin).

Update 2: If you want a Mixi invite

If you want a Mixi invite, head on over to this article on “How to get a Mixi invite” and request one over there.

Wow.. That's a great reason to ban ALL foreigners from the site. Very egalitarian. Even though Japanese Otaku are all welcome. Come on Anna… Ces't clair que ce n'est pas juste.

What if I just decided to ban Belgians from my site because they always talk about beer, waffles and “le foot?” I don't think that would be fair either.

  • Mike

Great attitude antisocialist! Now if only Martin Luther King had realized the same facts about white America in the 1960's we would all be so much better off. You are a true man of culture.

  • Mike

Yes, but that would be because the US has laws against discrimination, unlike Japan.

    Hi,

Could I have an invite? I have a keitai e-mail so everything should be fine there. talifeather_87@hotmail.com.

    Thank you.

  • http://tokyobling.wordpress.com/ Robert

Hi, Tokyobling here. I live in Japan and I have been an on/off Mixi user for years. There is an incredibly simple work around to this problem (not having a Japanese cell phone address), it's just a matter of knowing the right people. Foreigners and Japanese (as well) use this method all the time both in country and abroad.

I'm going to Japan for a year and i'd be glad if I could join mixi to make some friends and practise the language. I'd be nice if you could tell us the trick of joining without having a japanese mobile phone! thanks

  • Nate

I have lived in Japan for 5 years and just tried to sign up with Mixi today. It asked for my email address, hotmail, and my cell phone email address, softbank. I figured I would be in the clear, but it doesn't accept Softbank address for iPhones because the address ends in @i.softbank.jp, I just got a message saying its not a keitai address. But considering I have been a softbank person for over 4 years I am pretty sure its legit. pain in the ass

I guess all you folks will have to find another way to pretend that you're a Japanese. Poor, poor. If you read the original press releases about the change, you'll see there's a very clear, simple, and obvious way to get an account without a Japanese cell phone. Oh, but wait — you can't read Japanese, can you? Then why do you want to join mixi again?

Last time in Japan I bought a prepaid simcard and cheap phone (from softbank). would it be possible to activate a mixi account with that? I heard softbank prepaid phones have a wrong mail url…

Are there any other cheap providers which allow you to buy a simcard for about a month which allows you to activate the account?

It would be your right to do so. Also keep in mind that the Japanese may not be as open-minded toward foreigners as most western countries are. The Japanese tend to be more sceptical. Also, Japanese otaku are still Japanese. They don’t annoy their peers with unreadable messages due to language barrier etc.
I think it’s perfectly okay for a race, a country, a gender, a religion, an age group etc., to have an exclusive community. First off, it’s legal, and second, it’s got benefits. Like when I sign up at a dating site, I don’t want false hope or meaningless contacts with people from the other side of the globe. I want accessible people, accessible as in “real life”.
So while I understand it’s frustrating, let’s just accept that the Japanese want this “safe haven” kind of community. There are international communities out there and if you have real friends in Japan, they will sign up there for you.

Ano Koichi san, I moved up to the states a few years back and originally i was from kyoto. I don’t have a ketta address or phone that works anymore and one of my friends asked me to join mixi a few months back but the thing is even if you register it still needs a kettai address but I’m not entirely sure on this. it’s only a guess but if someone has a kettai address and you use theirs to confirm your account, will it work? or fail?

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

    yep, that should work

  • Lewie

    thank you, you´re so right!
by the way, it´s still possible to get an account as a foreigner! i did last month. if you have friends in japan, just ask them to registrate you with their keitai mail adress.

  • Lewie

may i ask you something? when i met my japanese friends this summer, they talked about mixi and that you can only use every cellphone mail adresse once…and the reason, mixi is doing this is to prevent ,that people own several accounts….probably thats just an stupid rumor…

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

    That makes sense, actually

  • T_sin999

    Hi!
the reason i came to this forum was actually mixi related!
isn’t just possible to protest using internet acusing the social network of discrimination and try to make them change this? all social networks i know can be used by anyone anywhere!! mixi has the luinguistic barrier, wich we’ll be by itself enough to restrain access to foreigners!!! so, why create this rule? even if this has to do with a protocol with cell companies it’s just not fair!! besides, the internet shouldn’t be restrained by countries and national rules and laws!!!!
after all mixi is not chinese..-. :(

  • Jac2294

hi wanna tell you that im american but the reason i want a mixi is not because i wanna be japanese!! ITS because i know people who live in japan and i left them sooo long ago … for years ive been trying to find a way to contact them.

  • Mike

I think this decision had more to do with preventing spamming than preventing foreigners from joining.

  • ichiban

I am wondering something,,, is it possible to find someone on mixi when you already know his/her keitai address?

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

Pretty sure that’s one of the only good ways to find someone, you’re in
    luck! :)

  • truth

    Someone said:
“I think this decision had more to do with preventing spamming than preventing foreigners from joining. ”

I don’t think so, because all other social network people from all the world can JOIN (even if there’s the spam) so why we can’t do the same with mixi?

  • Marthin

Hi! I live in Kyoto and have so far used Facebook as the source to chat with my japanese friends except the keitai denwa. But a lot of people just uses Mixi here so I’m trying to get an Mixi account but I can’t get past the mobile registration part since I have a pre-paid phone from Softbank. Do you know how to solve that problem ? Sounds weird that you need to have a phone with a subsrcription to join Mixi…thx a lot!

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

If you’re in Japan you could get a friend to receive the keitai email -
that’s the only really good way to make it work, I think :(

  • Klite1987

hi! i’m from italy and i love japan very much
i’d really appreciate if someone having a japan mobile phone help me to register to mixi i made an account but i need to confirm mobile mail.
