Mixi.jp now hates foreigners. Requires a (Japanese) mobile email address to join.

Wow Mixi, way to put a damper on things. About two months ago, I put up a tutorial on how to get started with Mixi so that you could use it to practice your Japanese. Now it seems like Mixi is pretty much off limits (for now) to foreigners without a Japanese cell phone email addresses. This theoretically means you have to be living in Japan, and own a cell phone if you want to be able to join Mixi now.

Here are the new rules:

  1. You have to confirm a Japanese cell phone email address (docomo, AU, softbank, etc).
  2. You also have to confirm a normal email address (hotmail, gmail, whatever).

If you don’t have both of these, you don’t get into Mixi, simple as that. I’ll still be happy to send folks invites, just know that you won’t be able to complete the registration process unless you have a Japanese cell phone.

Anyways, now the important thing is to try and figure out a way around this. Anyone know of a way to get a Japanese cell phone email without actually owning a cell phone? Anyone know a way to circumvent this? I invited myself to Mixi, but I couldn’t figure anything out. I looked around online as well. Still nothing. If any of you know, please let me know in the comments and I’ll make a post about it so we can get this Mixi train rolling again.

UPDATE: Just because some of you seemed worried, if you are already registered with Mixi, you’re okay (for now). I can’t see them shutting down already created accounts just because you don’t have a Japanese mobile email…though, perhaps I wouldn’t put it past them as well. Mixi has done some other crazy stuff that makes me think they are internazis (Thanks for the link, Caitlin).

Update 2: If you want a Mixi invite

If you want a Mixi invite, head on over to this article on “How to get a Mixi invite” and request one over there.

Confirmed. I received an invitation from a friend few weeks ago, but is seems that in order to complete a new registration you need a Japanese keitai address. I was not able to fulfill my reg.

Wow, what a party pooper. I wonder if Mixi will do a run through on existing accounts that registered w/o Japanese mobile emails? Hopefully they wont think of sending a notification asking registered users to update with a Japanese mobile email address. Anyways, I’ve done some searching, but haven’t turned up anything yet.

  • http://mukokuseki.org papajohn

Wow, that’s nicely retarded. What about all the Japanese living outside of Japan that are on Mixi?

  • http://caitlinomara.com Caitlin

I have a Mixi account but I refuse to log in again. A short time ago they changed their policy so that they now own your content (in more words but the meaning is there).

    http://altjapan.typepad.com/my_weblog/2008/03/m

This is just one more thing that Mixi’s doing to alienate users. I’ll be searching for alternatives to practice my Japanese.

  • http://www.tokidoki.splinder.com/ Tokidoki

I love Japan and most of Japanese friends I have, but -shit- this is too damned Japanese!

  • http://dailyinthelife.blogspot.com/ Monzika

Asked a few of my friends in Osaka that are tech-smart but so far….nada.

  • http://www.goddesscarlie.com GoddessCarlie

Damn, what a pain! Only because I hadn’t signed up yet – I was waiting for university holidays so I wouldn’t get too distracted there. :P :P What a poo. Why, I ask!!! Theoretically, I would think that Gaijin who know Japanese would be a great addition to a community like this. I guess I’m just thinking too diversely.

  • JohtoKen

Crap. I guess this explains why Ikuna-chan hasn’t sent me a single message ever since last month. =O

Looks like I’m gonna have to wait until I actually MOVE to Japan to join again. =3

EDIT: Well, since I’m already registered (with a fake birthdate, no less), seems like I’m safe…for now. =O

link is also in the article, as well

    Mixi’s being a turd.

Good point ….. most i know have a Japanese cell aswell though … but i’m sure many don’t.

Still, i live in Japan so no biggie for me.

  • http://www.neilduckett.com Neil Duckett

Is it really a big problem??

  • http://www.michaelburnner.com oo0speed0oo

I don’t see the sense in this unless they really do hate Americans. I still don’t do much on the page because i’m learning Kanji now, but it still sucks to know your not wanted in there…

  • sarindipity

Americans aren’t the only non-Japanese who try to get mixi accounts…

  • mmnessa

Why would they do that? I can’t see how this is going to help…if anything people will hate mixi from now on…

  • mmnessa

I’ve never really paid attention to mixi to be honest, I’m just wondering, is there really that many foreigners that they feel like they have to do something like this?

  • bia

dam they wont hide how xenofobic they are….come ON! its not like the foreigners are turning mixi upside down

  • xeli

ya, they love to exclude non-japanese pple

  • Sougen02

Wow thats very disappointing . I was hoping to make an account soon =_=

  • Sougen02

I guess I can kind of understand. I mean, look at Myspace. Its msotly used by Americans, and just look at the repuattion! (I understand not just americans have a myspace, just by majority)

I applaud the fact that it makes mixi safer, however, I do beleive their could have been a better method of doing so,other than this.

    =P

  • http://www.tokidoki.splinder.com/ Tokidoki

UPDATE: it seems that from now on Mixi will require also a PICTURE of your FACE and your FINGERTIPS in order to subscribe a new account… curious, just like new measures from Japanese Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act, started on Nov. 2007!

    ;-)

Don’t laugh, it could be true…

  • http://www.tokidoki.splinder.com/ Tokidoki

OK, I replied to an older post somewhere on this site some time ago and just copy/paste the my old reply containing the link. Sorry for repeating.
    But Latins said: “Repetita iuvant”.

  • JohtoKen

When I hear that English is not being taught in Japanese schools and that Eikaiwa programs are completely wiped off the Japanese agenda, THEN I’ll know that Japan has become Xenophobic.

  • SimonVaillancourt

I tried to get an email address from those companies and there is no way to get one so far. I’m still trying !

  • http://caitlinomara.com Caitlin

Not for some but I feel this business practice is potentially dangerous. What if Facebook started using people’s pictures, notes, and other entries for their own whim? Even if their security settings don’t allow that information to otherwise be normally available? With this new policy of Mixi’s, I wouldn’t post 1 personal detail at all.

  • http://caitlinomara.com Caitlin

About 15 others and I were…our Japanese teacher signed us up for this. I never stopped my account afterwards because I found it useful during college.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tkyosam Tkyosam

lol, come on man, they don’t “Hate” all foreigners. Just foreigners not living in Japan :P

  • http://sevententotokyo.com billywest

Lots of socially retarded people here blowing out a lot of hot air on mixi. Do you really want to practice Japanese with them? I mean, there are entire friend groups on mixi dedicated to discrediting businesses, other individuals,… it’s gone way too far. Do you know that people teaching English in eikaiwa schools have trash talked about them all the time on mixi? It’s just another reason for otakus to stay in their apartments even more.

  • mmnessa

It sucks, I’m sure Mixi is very resourceful when it comes to learning Japanese and a lot of people will be missing out on that (- _ -)(_ _)

  • mmnessa

it’s true that myspace is used mostly by Americans, but I know for a fact that a lot of British/Australian/Canadian also use it. Can you imagine what would happen if myspace required American cell phone numbers for signing up? or Facebook???

  • mmnessa

    I think u meant Hikikomori…hopefully they dont use mixi…

  • SimonVaillancourt

I have friends that are in japan to teach french.

  • http://www.tofugu.com Viet

I say their service, their rules. Look elsewhere if you don’t like their practices.

  • Hataki

Wow, I really glad that I signed up before this took place. This really sucks though. I invited my friend, but I guess she can’t get this service anymore.

  • JohtoKen

  • http://hanbaox2.blogspot.com hanbaobaoozers

Very true. There are a lot of Polish people on mixi!

  • WatashiBlah

This sucks. I kinda wanted to make an account but whatever.. Im sure somebody will find a way around this.Someone always does.
