A Huge Thank You! Japanese Learner Trends!

450 pages

I want to thank all of you for your help. By filling out my questionnaire I (might) be able to finish my thesis on time! I will be getting to all of your thank you cards eventually, though I wouldn’t expect them right away. I still have to finish my thesis first, and then I’ll get cracking on them, I promise. I’ve read through all of them and I’m incredibly impressed. They were full of things I never expected. For example, who knew that almost everybody hates pair work? I certainly didn’t. Also, did you know that people who are self taught have the tendency to be more comfortable with speaking, whereas those who are taught in a formal setting (like school) tend to be more comfortable with reading and writing?

Anyways, the best part about the survey was when famous bloggers who blog on Japan helped me out. I have to say I was startled when I got submissions from some of the big names. Although they are really just normal people like you and I, I thought you might want to see what they had to say, since they are “professionals” on the subject, and all.

Ken Y-N from WhatJapanThinks:
kenyn.jpgQ: What is your methodology to learning Japanese?
A: The best strategy I’ve found for myself usually involves me putting all the kanji I’d like to learn into an Excel spreadsheet. From there I poll myself to figure out what kanji is most likely to cause me future problems. After exporting it onto a grassy-colored graph, I know exactly what I need to work on. I really wish I could get a bigger poll base than myself, due to scientific reliability and such, but so far I’ve memorized the kanjis 世 and 論 down pretty good.

Claytonian from “The Hopeless Romantic
claytonian.jpgQ: What textbooks do you use?
A: I use “How to Score in Japanese.” You see, I always seem to be having these girl problems, and I never know why, so I feel like this book is probably very effective.
Q: If you don’t use a textbook, then what do you use?
A: My kitten. Whenever some nasty Japanese grammar gets me down, I just pick my kitten up and show it to everybody. When cats aren’t working I try making love to a pillow, which is just a fall back…really, I swear.

Chris from GaijinTonic: “drinking adventures in Japan
gaijintonic.jpgQ: How do you best learn Japanese?
A: Definitely sitting in a bar.
Q: Do you find pair work to be effective?
A: Yes, bars are very social places.
Q: Why?
A: Because I’m sooooo drunk right now. In Japanese, that’s “yotteiru.

Nick from LongCountdown
longcountdown.jpgQ: How do you best learn Japanese?
A: I like to put all my grammar points up on JapanSoc and ask people to vote them up. Once a grammar point gets three votes, it appears on the front page. From there, I can see all of the most popular Japanese grammar points in one, convenient place!

MagiBon from Youtube
mririan.jpgQ: What textbook do you use to learn Japanese?
A: *smile*
Q: How do you best learn Japanese?
A: *Strange turtle smile*
Q: Do you find pair work to be effective?
A: *Waves hysterically, instantly becomes famous*

So there you have it. The best of the best coming to help out little old me. I’ll be publishing more information on all the data you’ve given to me in the next couple of weeks…possibly in the form of an e-book. I’m thinking of writing two versions of my thesis:

1) Boring, not entertaining, and given to my professor.

2) Exciting, full of pictures, very sarcastic, and given to you for your enjoyment.

I’ll probably be asking more questions / putting up voting polls for a few things I am still wondering about, but that will come later tonight or earlier tomorrow. They won’t be nearly as complicated as the last one, so I hope you can help me out a little bit more when they come out. I’m learning all sorts of really interesting things, and I’m excited to be able to compile everything and eventually regurgitate them at you, like a mother bird and her children (yuck!).

Finally, I promise normal content will resume shortly! It’s been a while since I’ve really been able to sit down and write for Tofugu on a very consistent basis.

Also, if you’re interested in seeing the statistics I’ve gathered up so far, you can click here.

Oh my, that looks like a lot of paper. I’m looking forward to seeing your thesis. I can never get enough of anything Japanese… 「と大!」。Good luck on your thesis, maybe when you are done, you can go back to playing on your websites.

I take it not everyone gets a mention despite taking the time to fill out the survey!

  • mmnessa

I almost fainted laughing when I saw MagiBon. For some reason her comments remind me of her videos…
It also makes me question the authenticity of both the GaijinTonic dude and Claytonian’s answers to the questions. Especially Claytonian…I’ve always imagined him as the author of “ナンパ 101″ and not a reader of “How to Score in Japanese.”

Is the deadline up? I was saving it for a day this week when I’d have absolutely nothing to do. x.x Sorry.

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

    Ah! Sorry!

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

question the authenticity!?? Why would you go and do that??

  • kevinnwhat

the whole thing about comfortable with speaking verses kids in classes are more comfortable writing, I think its because when you learn by yourself, you can try to say words and pronounce everything perfect without anyone there to laugh at you. While kids in a classroom may be like…shitt everyones gonna laugh at me so im just gonna act like an idiot and not pronounce it right at all. Feel free to send candy or an xbox360 with the thank you letter. Thanks

  • kevinnwhat

    owned.

  • kevinnwhat

you can never get enough of anything japanese?! -.- that was the case when i first started studying japanese haha ( dont get me wrong i enjoy studying but some things…>:O) lol

  • mmnessa

    hmmm …I wonder why >_>

  • Eevee

@kevinnwhat Also, being a self-learner means you can go at your own pace, and you can spend as much time as you want on perfecting your pronunciation. In class you have to keep moving to keep a steady pace.

Anyways. I thought the magibon form was filled out rather scantily. I suppose she stared and leaned intently into the screen as she was typing, but shouldn’t there be indication of the effort she put in? where is the “*stares intently through screen to your very soul*”?
Very poorly done magibon, I’m only rating your videos 4.99999 stars from now on!

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

Isn’t that a little too high??

  • http://bowryj.wordpress.com/ Mizuu

thank you for making my April’s Fool day ^^ That was just KAKKOI ;)

Regaldless of how many pages you got and from who – I’m really interested in both versions if you’d manage to write it ^3^

  • http://www.goddesscarlie.com GoddessCarlie

I am interested in both versions as well. :)

I can’t believe I have the same strategy as Claytonian!

  • HB

がんばって!!!!!!! すげい!!! you have alot of repsonses. hope your thesis goes quickly!!!!!

  • JohtoKen

    Crap. I got Rick Roll’d. -_-

I can’t wait for the thesis to come in. It’ll be a pleasure reading both versions (I also read the formal stuff, too.)

  • rob

    Never gonna give you up

    Never gonna let you down

never gonna run away and dessert you.

    GOOD LUCK ON YOUR THESIS!!!!!
The rick roll was teh lulz

  • sougen02

Oh my goodness. I am was shocked to see that Magibon send an entry!
Until I read what she put. Typical =P

Good luck on your thesis Koichi! You should give your pressor the link to this website. Im sure he would be surprised =)

  • kevinnwhat

magibon’s videos are weird as hell. I just get a picture of mad old creepy guys watching her videos.

  • SimonVaillancourt

Hey why am I not in the best answers … LOL I know I was bad at it :( Sorry !

Hey Koichi did you like the real kana site I posted ?

  • http://www.tofugu.com Viet

I think it was an April fools joke. Or is my sarcasm meter off? :(

  • Meg

I’ve finally narrowed it down to two, maybe three possible answers to the ever present magibon question [which is WTF is she doing?].
    1. She’s created some mad awesome social experiment in which she acts like, well, you know, to see how stupid/simple/bored/pervy people in the world really are [though I bet figuring out how stupid someone is verses their pervert level may be hard....].
    OR…
    2. She’s just got way too much time on her hands and need to pick up rock climbing or something.
    or….
    3. She an alien numbing our minds with her smiles while waiting for the mother ship…I don’t think this is too likely, but lets keep the options open.

Koichi should write a thesis on magibon….though it may include a lot of asterisk actions.
On a normal note, I loved the survey, and reading what other people do [the famous ones at least *grumble*] was fun and inspiring. Kudos.

  • fredydb327

Wow… I never thought I’d get Ricked Rolled… Wow… This was the last place I thought this would happen. April fools though… wow… haha. I dislike his singing… really do.
Family Guy was better. Seth Macfarlane is an okay singer. haha. Well good luck in your thesis! Have fun with all the primary data!!!

  • fredydb327

:( I wonder how long I can stay on this top 10 commentors thing. I remember seeing tofugu back in June while when I watched Gokusen. Haha. Ahh the days of ho pants and air sex. haha.

oh man, airsex were the days

I remember I was sad for a little before you made Tofugu, because I remember you had just one site for both Japanese and English. Then you made that video about how something was conflicting with the way you were doing/explaining things on your site [I don't remember the details, but I just know there was some down time]. I don’t know if you still have the video, but the first article you wrote basically explains what I’ talking about.

    Okay, you guys have to check this out;
    http://www.oniazuma.com
I can’t stress it enough. About 60, english subbed videos of cultural, real life Japan. I saw news stories, gaijin documentaries and history discussions and generally an immense treasure of striking insight. I mean, really, guys, you SHOULD check this out.
Koichi-san, sorry if you see this as a spam(which i guess it kinda is) but i honestly wanted you to find this out. Plus, i filled out the damn thing.
    Love.

  • SimonVaillancourt

LOL, not an April fools no . I am trying to stuff my silly head with hiragana and katakana, and found that site the other day ! funny enough it helped me with my Hiragana. Now I need to fill my head with Katakana and then some Kanji.

  • mmnessa

I think you will find that youtube serves for the same kind of purpose as well as japanprobe. It looks good nonetheless…

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

it’s a really interesting website – lots of serious topics I don’t see in other places. subscribed!

  • harry

If you make a funny version of your thesis, I think it would be so interesting to read.

  • kevinnwhat

“I’ve finally narrowed it down to two, maybe three possible answers to the ever present magibon question [which is WTF is she doing?].”

HAHAHAHAH lmao!! wtf is she doing?! IS RIGHT!

  • SimonVaillancourt

I think reading your thesis result and the whole document would be great. even if it’s not funny !

  • Chimiko

Koichi, I’m not very disciplined, so I couldn’t really answer any of your questions very practically. Most of the answer would’ve begun with “umm” lol. So I couldn’t help out with your last questionnaire. Really sorry.! -_-;;.
Now, I’ll try my best to fill up your other upcoming ones though. I really want to help!
Really looking forward to the funny version of your thesis. Good luck~ がんばれ~

  • diojenisu

Youtube videos of such content are sparse and often unsatisfying. Gonna check out japanprobe though…
    thanks

By the way, doy ou guys really think that Magibon is a native Japanese speaker? I would be utterly disgusted if this whole thing was a big joke.
Until then let us all watch as she rnaks higher and higher on Youtubes “popularity foodchain” =P

  • mmnessa

I think I would prefer the “Exciting, full of pictures, very sarcastic” version :P

  • mmnessa

not if you check the right channels! but I’m sure you’ll love japanprobe, I mean, who doesn’t?

  • fredydb327

I just saw magibon or whatever…
    “…”
    or to quote her…
    “(._.’)”
Either way, that part makes sense now and it added more sense to the April fools joke.

  • ケルネチ

stickam.jp is a good way to learn!!! =D But you have to figure out how to make an account.

  • Mnemosyne

It says on her site–and she’s said it in her videos (albeit in Japanese)–that she’s from the US (PA, maybe?) and her dream is to visit Japan. I think some Japanese company is actually taking her there or something….

She’s definitely not a native speaker, though. She’s using it as a study tool…I think…

  • Erin

Oh jeez, did I just get Rick Rolled?

  • WingsOfDaidalos

For lack of finding a better place to put this, and out of sheer and shameful desperation, I’m going to ask this here. (I have a test on monday).

When using a sentence like “日本へ勉強に行きます。” (“I’m going to Japan to study”) and you want to sum up 2 (or more) things you are going to do, can you use a simple “と”?

Example. I want to say “I’m going to London to shop and have fun.”

    ロンドンへ買い物と遊びに行きます。

Or do you use a て-form to sum up the different verbs.

    ロンドンへ買い物に行って、遊びに行きます。

I get the feeling that with the last thing I am saying “First I go to London to shop, then I go to London to have fun.” which is not exactly what I meant to say.
Maybe it’s something else entirely? I realize this website is not here to answer my questions like this, but there is such a large number of talented readers and my teacher isn’t responding to her email. :(

  • http://www.tofugu.com Viet

Here is recent post of Magibon featured in Japanese TV:

    http://www.japanprobe.com/?p=4272

I haven’t seen any previous videos of her, but from that post alone I don’t see anything special about her. Her Japanese seems very low level…

  • http://www.tofugu.com Viet

OK I decided to search for one of her videos… A good camera angle and a lot of rehearsal can go a long way…

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

Not even really good rehearsal. She can say like three things.

She learned her Japanese from music and j-dorama folks. This is why I tell you all to learn traditionally for at least a few years before trying to jump into media type things!
