Nara’s Super-Creepy New Mascot wants you to Win a Japanese Textbook!

This Contest has been extended to April 9, 2008!

Nara-City, the capitol city of Nara prefecture, is known for it’s beautiful temples and overly aggressive biting deer monsters. This year, Nara Heijo-Kyo Capitol is celebrating its 1300th year anniversary, and will be holding a big a event. Usually when this kind of thing happens, whoever is running the event comes up with an over the top mascot that cutes you into coming. This year, the Association for Commemorative Events seems to be taking the opposite approach.

Nara’s new creepy mascot

Perhaps the event is expecting too many people, and Nara is too small to support them, so they are trying to scare visitors away? What’s he doing with his hand? Trying to touch you in inappropriate places? He kind of looks like Buddha…except for the fact that he has antlers coming out of his head. I would never spend any time alone with this guy. In fact, I wonder how he eats, because no restaurant I know of would let someone with no shoes and no shirt in, even if summers do get warm. Also, I know what the thing on his forehead is supposed to be, but honestly, it just looks like a third nipple (actually, his only nipple from the looks of things) smack dab between his eyes. Nara Association of Commemorative Events, what were you thinking?

The entirety of Japan also feels like Chester (I’ve named him Chester, don’t ask) is a bit on the ugly side. When the Events board asked for suggestions on what to name him (Please pick mine!), they instead got a ton of people complaining about how ugly it was. Still, I’m interested to find out what his name ends up being. I mean, come on, he has antlers coming out of his head…

Winning a Prize (it’s a contest!)

When I saw this deer-Buddha-man, I thought: “Hey, I bet there’s someone out there who can come up with something better.” That’s when I took to drawing my own mascot.

new nara mascot

The Monk looked up from copying Sutras. It had been three days since he had last eaten, so he thought the rumbling must be in his stomach. He went back to work, ignoring the vibrations.

Outside, a giant deer was blowing toxic green slime all over the city. When he came across a building, he would trample it with his feet, made completely of diamonds. When a building was too tall, he would simply swing his head forward and cut them in half with his kick-ass katana antlers. There was nothing this deer could not overwhelm with its sheer might and skill.

The Japanese government knew they had to call on Godzilla, which sucked because he would always destroy Tokyo before helping with anything else. After flattening the Ginza area, Godzilla was coaxed into going to Nara, where he roundhouse kicked the deer in the stomach. The deer threw up some of its radioactive slime from the impact and then sliced Godzilla in the face with his katana antlers.

This is where you come in. You have two choices (as well as two prizes). Here they are:

1) Draw your own Nara Mascot:

Prize: Japanese text book fit to your level of Japanese
Deadline: Monday, March 24, 2008 Wednesday, April 9. 12:00 noon Pacific Standard Time.

The rules are as follows. Not following the rules could make your entry less winnable:

  • Must be an original drawing of some sort. Hand drawn, computer drawn, anything is okay. Just don’t steal some other mascot and put it up here.
  • Has to somehow be related to either deer, a buddha, a temple, a shrine, or Nara (in some way). Basically, it has to relate to Nara in some way.
  • The funnier it is, the more likely it will win.
  • I will pick my favorites and then put them up in a future post for you all to vote on (to pick the final winner).

The winner of the “draw your own Nara mascot contest” will win a Japanese textbook of my choice. It really depends on what level you are, so if you win, we’ll figure it out together. I’ve got favorite text books up and down the level curve, so all people studying Japanese should apply! Just send me your image by the deadline!

2) Finish the Story

Prize: Mystery Prize worth $20+ somehow related to Japanese
Deadline: Monday, March 24, 2008 Wednesday, April 9. 12:00 noon Pacific Standard Time.

Everyone see the story underneath the image of my awesome slime-spewing deer? All you have to do is finish the story and send it in to me. Please don’t write more than two pages, single spaced. I’ll pick the ones I like the most and post them up on the 25th, as well as choose the winner for it. I can’t tell you what the prize is, but know that it’s pretty sweet. If I don’t like any of them, then I suppose it is possibe that nobody can win.

There you have it. Any questions? Please contact me. I’m really looking forward to seeing your submissions!

I love how there’s a mystery prize and yet the title clearly states “Win a Japanese Textbook”, haha. Anyway, I think I’m gonna submit one, just for kicks. Will you write the story for me, Ko? It can be a joint admin entry!

  • http://www.tofugu.com Viet

I’m assuming staff is excluded from entering? :P

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

feel free to enter, but you can’t win since you’re a writer :P

entering is okay – winning is not :)

  • http://tofugu.com Tofugu_Erin

We should post all the pictures deer poop-themed items we saw in Nara.

Maybe that can be a follow-up post.

    Also, of course I can’t win : }

  • Hashizume

  • Liban

    love the green flames lol

  • It’s Nicci!!

I’m gonna take advantage of my mad stick figure drawing skills and hopefully get a pity prize out of this..xD I tried finding a Genki textbook for less than $25 and it’s physically impossible. I’m pretty sure I searched the bowls of internet hell itself trying to find it but I guess i’ll just have to wait for my birthday and/or pity prize. All about the pity prize..

  • http://youtube.com/profile?user=chokudori クリス

Actually if you check at Amazon.com or Half.com, They sell it for $17 [of course you'll have to add in tax and shipping, which might equal just about $25]

  • BiZhu

So can we do both? <.<…>.>

  • insomniacgamer

why doesn’t someone draw a flying reindeer dropping an atomic bomb out of it’s butt which destroys the town ^_^ i would but i have poor pc drawing skills :’(

  • rinrin

Overly aggressive biting deer monsters…they really are, they chased me and my mum for our green tea ice cream. T-T evil deer.

  • Bluregarde_Q_Kazoo

I looked on Amazon and Half.com, but they were all $25 not including shipping….I’ll check again though, maybe it’s changed :D
    Thanks ^^

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

    it’s green radioactive slime!

  • SimonVaillancourt

    Anything in 3D ?

  • SimonVaillancourt

Oh I forgot … Do you recommend the book Learning Japanese in Mangaland ?

  • kevinnwhat

I live in mangaland with fairies.

  • http://www.tofugu.com Viet

I wouldn’t see why you couldn’t do it in 3D. I think the basic criteria is it must be your own original work.

  • http://appletrees.deviantart.com appletrees

So would making a comic be alright? 2 page? 1 page?

  • Majutsuko

Whoever designed that monstrosity should be made to commit seppuku.

  • SimonVaillancourt

I’ll try to make a 3D sculpt in Zbrush… But It will not be for the contest because I would not have the time to finish in time ;)

  • eLsa

=P the mascot looks somewhat alike an oversized baby with branches sprouting out of his head…

  • http://www.neilduckett.com Neil_Duckett

That’s a pretty wierd looking Mascot …. not that i could come up with better though.

  • http://youtube.com/profile?user=chokudori クリス

Submitted, however, I feel like I should have add more stuff to the picture. Well maybe when the contest is over I’ll make a redux version of my mascot. For some reason I wanted to add more だんご and maybe some deer うんち. I was also wanted to incorporate ゴジラ somewhere in the background inspired from your video in Nara], but then again, it is about the mascot haha

  • Jesse

Okay so I have no clue where I should of posted this question. Does anyone on this website via staff or viewer know whether or not you call stuents by their first name or by their family name? I am curious because I’m going to school for Japanese Studies and when I am finished I would like to move to Japan to become a ESL instructor. Thanks.

  • http://tofugu.com Tofugu_Erin

Japanese professors call their students by their last name + さん. I’ve never heard a Japanese professor call a student by their first name, I think it’s just not done. I read a news article about a professor who had his pay docked because he added ちゃん to his female students’ last names, though, haha.

  • http://youtube.com/profile?user=chokudori クリス

What a way to get get docked, haha.

One thing I also heard is to never refer to yourself as ‘name’ + さん.

  • http://tofugu.com Tofugu_Erin

Well, because ちゃん has a certain connotation (it’s a diminutive suffix and implies a certain level of familiarity/affection), it’s not really appropriate for teacher-student interactions. Kind of creepy.

  • Jesse

Thanks for the info guys. I was just curious. I wasn’t sure it was last name first still b/c they are younger and only students. I guess now that you guys have explained it to me it does seem kind of weird not to say their last names first. Anyway thanks again for the help.

I also think so the background of that mascot is deers and Buddhist temples that we often see in Nara.
